Her license was suspended after she got caught driving drunk. She should been locked behind bars for that alone, but of course daddy's checkbook can pay for anything.

she knew the rules of the road. she doesn't suddenly forget them because her license was suspended
did you never ever in your life disobey a traffic rule? would you find it fair if the judge gave you 45 days of dodging soap in prison, JUST because you disobeyed a traffic rule?

if every person that was caught drunken behind the wheel had to go to prison, they would have to built an aweful amount of prisons to house all those poor bastards

I think the prison sentence was a punishment that was meant to "wake her up" before she kills herself or someone else while driving with alcohol in her system. Paying fines and having her license suspended didn't seem to change her dangerous behavior (this was probably the reasoning of the judge).
It was the repetition of what she was doing that got her into this much trouble, I think - not just one foolish mistake. And if she is speeding, not keeping to her lane, or forgetting to turn her headlights on, she is definitely a hazard to herself and others.
I don't hate Paris. But it is not easy driving out in LA. If you are on the freeway, there are many lanes of traffic; if you are driving in the mountains, there are lots of steep cliffs. You really have to pay attention out there. Wouldn't be easy to have any drinks in your system and make it safely home.

Now tell a relative who has lost a loved one to a drunk driver that she didn't hurt anyone. Every year there's around 17,000 car accident fatalities related to someone driving drunk, and while Paris Hilton was lucky she didn't hurt anyone, she was putting herself and others at high risk. The fact that she violated the terms of her license suspension shows you how much she cares about the incident.

Driving without a licence is brainless but somehow understandable. But driving DRUNK is dangerous, it's a crime. In most countries she would have to spend at least 6 months or 1 year in jail for that.
