By the time when she reacher her mid 30s where most athletes physical performance declines in comparisson to those in their 20s, she was thinking more about retirement. Still she was able to reach a Wimbledon final when she finally retired in 1994 at 37.
The gay rights activism came in the late years of her career and in no way it affected her perfomance.

A daughter looks up to her father (not some woman in sports). Just knowing that your father is proud of you for whatever you accomplish is what is important. Parents should not push their kids into things, but they should support them once the kids go in a certain direction. If it doesn't last, it doesn't mean the kid is a quitter, it just means they are learning about different things. I don't have kids but I had great parents. So, my memories of how I was treated are what I am basing my opinion on.
