My guess is that it was taken shortly before or around the time Queen's debut album was released. I actually recall hearing that from somewhere, although I could be wrong.

Ah:) (I just looked for the photograph in the 'Freddie Mercury Solo Collection'); it says: "Freddie posing as Jimi Hendrix with a borrowed Fender Telecaster, photographed in his bedroom by a friend in 1968."
