You misunderstand as well. In Britain, and I'm sure in every country as well, universities give out all sorts of honorary things, usually PhDs (Brian's had a few) but also fellowships and all sorts of other types of honorific. They are purely for being famous/achievement/charitable works etc.
This honorary fellowship has nothing to do with his academic studies and there is no money involved. The clue being in the link I posted up above ie. honorary. It even says what its for in the link...
