How loud was Queen?

Well, when I saw them last year, as Q+PR, they actually weren't that loud, in comparison to other bands I've seen, like Rush (who are pretty damn loud - I should know, I saw them two days ago.)

Let me just tell you that yesyerday i went to a Rock Show in Portugal and the last two acts were:

Joe Satriani and Metallica. It was heaven for guitar players. Satriani was on the top of his game and was really loud, but when Metallica got on stage with extra sound...man! Unbelievable!!

But the loudest live band are (were?) Manowar. These guys used to be on the Guiness World of records. They have the best sound equipment in the world and their sound, even though it´s very loud, doesn´t hurt your years because it´s balanced. Trylly amazing what this guys have acomplished with their live sound.

Check out their Hell on Earth DVD´s or their new "The day the earth shook". Trully the best live sound!

Y prefer quality rather than loud sound...

For that reason, Roger Waters have the best sound on earth now, and quadraphonic...

also (don;t laugh) INXS at NEC brum 1987 (kick tour) was deafening...could be because they had all the high-tone stuff up really loud

I don't know about Queen.

I saw them in 78 and in 80 and both shows were deafening!!! I wasn't too far from the stage at both gigs. Once they started it was intense from begining to end. It was AWESOME!!! To hear Brian's guitar at full volume was incredible. Freddie's voice at times could go right through you and John and Roger together made the entire place rumble.

have to agree with you as i saw them then too [row7],my ears ached for days after, same as they did after seeing brian at the hammersmith odeon with cozy on the back to the light tour

They were 'appropriately' loud. Clear, but loud. Many of the sound and lighting people worked with McCartney during a USA tour years ago, so they knew what they were doing.

Nothing outrageous like Deep Purple or Ted Nugent. Ouch, ouch, and ouch.

Then again, if anyone heard the WOF performance in Hollywood, as well as the WWRY premiere outside the Paris Hotel........good gawd........it hurt!

Brian likes it TOO loud.

When i saw Deep Purple the drums were so loud that when Ian Paice was playing the bass drum it was almost stopping my heart.And this was an open air gig.
I do remember seeing Pink Floyd on the pulse tour and whilst i wouldnt say they were particularly loud,Richard Wright went to play a particular note on the keyboards that absolutely shook the building.Being a devil that he was,he held onto that note causing a dude next to me to shout out "Fuck off bastard" as he was holding onto his seat.

The interesting thing about Pink Floyd live was, since it was surround sound (yes, surround sound in a football stadium!), it wasn't blasting so loud from one direction and was more balanced. The result was it was loud but you could still hear to talk to the person next to you.

I know the Scissor Sisters made my ears buzz for a couple of days after...and Behind Crimson Eyes were loud - I was sitting on the stage during one show (I was trying to reach Garth's ((The bassist's)) leg and cling to it....) and he started playing and I fell off the stage because of it...but I was sitting next to one of the speakers so that may've had something to do with it...

Interesting post! Maybe one day I'll have to check that out. But for now, I'm happy with Battle Hymns. A great, classic album.
