Guys, as a Ph.D. candidate myself (chemistry), this make no sense at all. What a joke! Even if he were to get a Ph.D. at some point, what in the world is the hurry? I can assure you that he is WAY too old to ever be considered for any kind of academic position (such as an Assistant Professor position). I can also assure you that if Brian May does in fact receive a Ph.D., it will be a consolation prize handed out by the school in hopes that he will donate money, rather than something that has to do with any “contributions” made to science. It is utterly sleazy to me, a hard-working young scientist, to see this kind of thing.

And even though he´s not listed on that site (whathever that is!) every musician from all genres would love to work with him. This is success!!
Important or not, what do you care about his live? Just because there´s going to be a concert doesn´t mean he has to play there. He´s probably fed up with charity concerts that in the end only promotes the artists who play there. He is the Queen+Paul Rodgers guitarrist right now, so i think it would be more polite to ask Queen to do a set of their own instead of hiring Joss Stone to sing other artists songs when she has great songs of her own and then ask Brian to join in and do a version that he didn´t choose to play in the first place. This means that he´s not a sell out! But we´ll hear the version very soon. What do you think about this? Shurelly this shows respect for Brian don´t you think?
And i´m not going to comment your words on his Phd thing. It was disrespectfull to say the least. He´s working with very important people right now on that field, and his friends have stated over the years that he´s above average when it comes to intelligence.
And if they compare him with some Queenzoners then i think he´s up a few levels!

As you say, you are young. Brian May is not. Neither am I. As we age, and you will experience this one day, we begin to sense our mortality and feel pressure to complete the things in our life that are important to us. As friends and family pass away around us, we begin to ask " when me?"
I doubt Brian intends to pursue a career in astronomy, but getting his PHD is important to him. And after a lifetime of doing the celebrity thing, perhaps it's just not that important to him.
As far as the "consolation prize", you don't know that.
You need to not be so judgmental. Perhaps you chose chemistry because it does not require you to understand humanity. Let the man do his thing, you do your thing and be happy.

Well, not that I think he's (too) self absorbed, but he is a guitar virtuoso, successful musician and a very smart man.

Though Paris Hilton is featured many times in Biography.com though she is not a guitar virtuoso, successful anything (not counting heiress), and she probably doesn't know how to spell virtuoso or guitar for that matter.

So what, it's something he's wanted to finish for a long time. If he's dedicated, even overly dedicated, then what's the trouble in that? At least he isn't sitting at home stagnating. And why would he want to be considered for an academic position? He's already very successful in another high paying job, and although it would be an honor to be considered for such a position he has other commitments. No need to read through my rant, just look at the other posts. It's obvious that you're at least 90% wrong.
