Freddie a Conservative?!!

Hi Guys,
Check this Wikipedia article out:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservative_Party_%28UK%29. In particular, note the list of high-profile party members back in the 1970s!

As a Republican myself, I couldn't be more pleased. At the same time, I somehow doubt it as well. Any opinions here? Was Freddie a member of the British Conservative party back in the 1970s or not?

My civil rights professor in college was a registered Republican who voted for Clinton twice, supports the right of a woman to have an abortion if she chooses, wants to increase taxes on the wealthy (like himself) and stop taxing people who make less than $25,000 a year entirely.

Party affiliation means nothing.

Tom Jones, Rod Stewart and Roger Waters are there, too...

Yeah I'm Libertarian...there are things on the left and right I agree and disagree with. I'm gay but believe in Republican principles like less government and less spending. (Unfortunately the Republicans we have in office now apparently don't believe in these principles.)

Freddie was never a *member* of any party whatsoever, but he hinted at conservative sentiments. Having said that, there is quite a fair chance that he was joking about, or using it as a part of his regal, aristocratic 'image', as there are plenty of quotes and pieces of indirect evidence pointing towards Freddie being completely a-political. Roger was the only member with any pronounced political views.

There's also quite a fair chance that Freddie voted for and/or supported the party that wasn't going to tax 90% of his earnings.

I'm a Republican as well, and I figure, as Freddie never really talked about his political views, he could have been anything. I can see him being a sort of Goldwater-Republican type ("I want the government out of my pocket and out of my bedroom!") (Goldwater was <3). But anything's possible, I suppose. But I'd take any direct party affiliation with a grain of salt unless a more reputable source than Wikipedia came forward.

Edit: Also, to those who say "wellll Freddie was gay", there ARE many gay/gay-friendly Republicans, they're just not always terribly high-profile. (Despite the fact that there is a rather odd group of individuals who continually insists that everyone in the Bush administration is gay because Bush is trying to get the gays to take over the world - which I find rather hard to believe.)

This was the reason, according to Peter Freestone. I believe Freddie was apolitical, but didn't want to be taxed out the wazoo.

do they have conservative/liberal parties in the UK? i figured if he lived in europe it didnt matter about here...or did i miss something?

I really don't think this info is accurate. First of all, Freddie Mercury always thought politics was boring, so he really wouldn't be involved, especially in the 70s when he was trying to sky rocket his music career. Second, we all know that anyone can go onto wikipedia and change the information there, so anybody could have done it. My personal opinion, Freddie Mercury being a conservative is a load of crap. Also the fact that Queen left England in the late 70s to avoid the steep income tax would obviously validate the evidence that he is not a conservative.
