A PhD-thesis is examined by a scientific council. One of the requirements for a pass, is that it furthers the general scientific knowledge in some way. Therefore, ANY pass is an achievement worth noting!

If you read mr May's weblog you will see that - in England - this is not the case.
Level 7 'pass' simply means that you have to restart your research.
As far as I am aware of, in our country mr. Quinn (Netherlands), you either pass, or you don't. No such thing as a level?

I think the committee gets to include a judgemental phrase with a pass, but I'm not sure about that.

I would imagine that regardless of country, there are 3 types of results. One is perfect (which is rarely, if ever, given); more common is pass with some fixing. Brian has stated that is what he received, and I believe that is what the vast majority of all successful PhDs receive. Remember, it only takes one nit-picky examiner to find one tiny fault to keep it from being perfect.
The third option is failure. But to be honest, if you make it to the final exam stage, and you're adviser has allowed you to get that far, you have much bigger problems than a poorly written dissertation.

I'm terribly happy for Brian. My fiancee is preparing her doctorate work (on the intersection of literature, woman's issues and the classic faery tale), and I can honestly say I am suitably impressed from a distance (a Master of Fine Arts will be enough for me, thank you very much). Having viewed the thesis-writing process firthand, I must commend him heartily for this astonishing application of resources and intelligence. It's always nice to listen to music you know is created by genuinely brilliant people.

haha i couldnt do it. after that long of a time to work on something, or to set it down and pick it up again? onces its accomplished its a sense of relief but then 'now what?' haha.
