We had to do ones on The Legend Of Mt Tongarero and Hatupatu and the Bird Woman (myths/legends), but I think from HistoryGirls comment my suggestion might be a bit far off. Ah well, good luck with the testing anyway

The Lengend of King Arthur perhaps (just make sure you've got a modernized English version...the version in the original Anglo-Saxon is a BITCH to read, even for native speakers of English. No sense in making it harder than it's gotta be), or Robin Hood or one of my favorite Chivalric myths from the British Isles, Tristan and Isolde.
If you want some light history, you could always do biographies of some of the major kings and queens...those can be watered down into something very basic. King Richard the Lionhearted, King Henry VIII is always an interesting choice, Queen Elizabeth I or in the more modern times Queen Victoria.

I can't really find a good place for the story of Tristan and Isolde, but if you've seen the movie that came out last year it's pretty accurate to the legend.
