Please help me to identify a song :)

I've had this melody of a song playing in my head for two days now. This a kinda silly, beucause I can't remember any lyrics from this song, but I am almost 100% sure that i tells about a part of some city, a part that has been demolished as it was and doesn't exsist anymore.

All my life I thought this song was Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles (this name fits the story of the lyrics of my missing song perfectly), but yesterday I listened to Strawberry Fields and found out to my huge surprise that it's a complitely different song.

My missing song is slow tempo, has a touching sad, someone could say haunting, melody and is from the 60s or 70s.

It's getting really on my nerves not being able to identify this melody in my head, so please suggest songs if you have any ideas :)

PS. It's not Goodbye Yellow Brick Road :D

This is a real shot in the dark and very probably not it but here goes. Could it be the Bee Gee's and The New York Mining Disaster?

The songs I've been thinking about has a similar tempo to Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale if that helps anyone..

There is a website where you tap the melody on your keyboard and the website identifes the song. I can't remember the address but I'm sure someone here knows it. It works pretty well, from what I remember*

*increasingly less as time passes. In fact, where was I..?

I think I may have heard it... Was it by a band with a lengthy name? Something 'New Orleans', or another location.

This narrows it down to a non-instrumental song. So half the Alan Parsons Project and no Smooth Jazz. Check.
