Brian vs. Roger – rare interview w/ Roger Taylor 1993

Hi everybody!

On the occasion of Brian's comment about the song "New Dark Ages" in his soapy box (“I do not know anything about this. … To be honest, I don’t think I have heard it.”), I'd like to share a rare interview with Roger from 1993. It’s from a CD called “Strange Tracks”.

This is a great unreleased interview where Roger talks about new projects: His new album (that later became “Happiness?”), the collaboration with Yoshiki, which where a different project at this time, and the making of last QUEEN album. He also speaks about the differences between ‘The Brian May Band’ and ‘The Cross’. ;-)

It has some priceless moments!!! Especially when Roger get’s into a state and calls Brian “the f***ing expert!" =:-))

Today it’s kinda weird that Brian didn’t want to be involved in making the last ‘Queen album’ at first – and that Roger started doin’ it with John. He says: “John and I will definitely be carrying things on … with or without Brian – it’s up to him!”

Later I guess I remember that Brian said in an interview that he heard the material Roger and John recorded for the last album, and it sounded so “ruinously” that he had to be involved to “save” the record.

I think Roger and Brian weren’t “best friends” at that time (like they use to be these days)…

There's often a few interesting moments in these old interviews.

It's interesting... It's very seldom that the band members comment on solo tracks by their bandmates. But I find it hard to believe that Brian hasn't heard all of Roger's solo efforts and vice-versa.

I remember reading somewhere that Roger did indeed bring "New Dark Ages" to the table during the sessions for "The Miracle" or "Innuendo". Reportedly he and John exchanged some harsh words and John threatened to quit the band if they made Freddie sing those lyrics. I don't know how accurate that is, but it does sound plausible.

Though Roger is very clear about (not) commenting on someone's solo-projects one shouldn't state that Brian and Roger weren't the best of friends at that time in 1993.
Don't forget they were on a kind of cross road in the "career" of Queen or what was left of it. Perhaps Brian wasn't ready to make decisions yet and Roger just needed to force Brian to join him and John in the making of Made in Heaven by leaving him no option. Of course Brian would never call it a day while precious material was laying on the shelve, recorded by Freddie with one reason only: to be released. Not only to fullfill Freddie's "last wish" of having it released or dealing with their own feelings by "completing" the Queen catalogue, they also had a million dollar baby in their hands.

And Brian only wanted to release material if it was 100% worthwhile or "Queen worthy". But they all must have felt that way, as allways.

Just my point of view.

I'm just listening to it now. It's interesting that Roger wanted to continue Queen with John, but Brian wasn't up for it. How the tables turned eventually.

I also find it interesting that on the last tour Roger referred to Brian on numerous occasions as "My best friend."
