Oh, sad no one mentioned "Save Me", 'cause it's such a beautiful song and the song structure reflects the song's meaning, which adds to its beauty. Of course, the song, per se, is nothing really special; as Brian remarked, it was Freddie's way of singing this song that made it quite beautiful, especially in live performances.

In Kampuchea they played the song for the first -or one of the first, I don't know - times. It's terrific.

The lover is lonely, absolutely lonely and his feelings have been all exposed. He's alone with his pain and his wonderings. That's why, and it's quite clever, the beginning of the song is almost a cappella: if you pay attention to most live performances, and the one from Kampuchea is my favorite, the piano is played pianissimo, very quietly, and Freddie is left absolutely alone to sing the song: he's there, facing the crowd, you can barely see the other guys, and it's all silence around him. It's difficult because, well, feeling lonely on stage is bad enough, but the worst of all is having to come up with the music by yourself, alone, with your voice, which actually begins the music, so you can't make any mistake that people won't notice. If the singer comes in when the band is already having their go, well, it's easier, you have other sounds you may refer to in order to start off the song.

"It started off so well" must really start off damn well if one's willing to deliver a good performance of the song. And it's a cappella, basically, the singer doesn't have any other reference than his own mind, which is pretty terrifying.

That said, Freddie used to pulled it off wonderfully, to the point of reaching moments of real genius.

"Hang my head and I advertise my SOOOOUL FOR SAAALE OR REEEeent", do watch the video from Kampuchea when he sings that. He deals brilliantly with his natural register, which is in fact the most hard to do, and produces a absolutely clear, beautiful sound - SOOOUL...is done in E3 and E3# (soooul) F3 (sale or rent) at the end of the phrase, I guess, but I'm taking it from memory and I may well be wrong, but it certainly fell in his natural register, bellow middle C.

It's not only absolutely brilliant the way the moves between different registers, but his lower, absolutely pure, crystalline and soft register blossoms to its full potential, and the beauty of it is hard to describe - you can actually watch on the video that when he's finishing the phrase, he does laugh at himself with a self-satisfying feeling: it's his "Eureka" moment, the song had just been composed, it was nothing besides a sketch, basically, and he gave it life in a brilliant way: you can almost read in his mind a "I'm really damn good".

I think it's important this topic came up. "Save Me" is a very revealing song, musically speaking - a man/woman whose very existence is so linked to the loving one that he/she actually begs for saving to the very person who is deemed responsible for its collapse. It's absolute loneliness. And it does come out rather well in the song's structure: Freddie is left almost alone to sing half of the song and then he has to change his plaintive, depressive and moaning tone to that of a person who's desperate - it's interpretation in its fullest sense.

Singers of this world! Ah, people should know this video (from Kampuchea) from inside out, so to speak: it's a singing lesson, a most valuable one. Freddie pays attention to very technical elements such as posture, positioning of the head, breathing - rarely doing high chest breathing and doing a lot of job with his INTERCOSTAL MUSCLES, which is really essential for not harming either your chest muscles or your throat. He pays so much attention to it that right up until the very end of the concert he's just fine, absolutely, completely fine, not wasted in the least. And the mouth...it's ugly, a lot of times, because he does some odd movements with

Very interesting post, Yara. 'Save Me' is definitely one of the band's most romantic compositions, and Freddie Mercury sings it so well. However, I can't agree with you on Innuendo. I honestly think his voice was in top shape on that album. His voice certainly deteriorated from 1983-86, which is a short time span, but his voice from 1987 to 1991 improved dramatically. The reason for its improvement was probably because he wasn't going on tour anymore, it saved him greatly. I do think, however, that on The Miracle he did sound like he was trying too hard at times (his crazy vocal gymnastics). But on Innuendo the man simply sang, and sang beautifully at that. I also give him respect for singing in such a horrible condition. The only fault I can come up with, which doesn't bother me in the least, is that his voice does sound a tad nasally, for lack of a better term.

I like In Only Seven Days, because Freddie sings about the girl and that's why it is different. and may be Dreamers Ball is very romantic song
