Unfortunately, this tape is real. I saw it on the national news a few days ago when I was at my parent's house for a few days over Spring Break.
The Marine command is running an investigation into the incident, and the marines involved are now back in the US.
I hate to say that this kind of shit happens in the military, especially in the Marines, where they are like "hyper soldiers". It's common knowledge that to make an effective soldier you have to de-program them, so to speak. American society values human life (and animal life) and you can't have a soldier that values human life to the point where they will not kill in a combat situation. That is what boot camp and other training is meant to do; de-program the soldiers so that they do not think of the enemy as quite human, quite worthy of saving. Unfortunately some of them take that a bit too close to heart, as evidenced by this asshole.
I only wish this guy was up for more than just a dishonorable discharge and maybe some prison time. With all of his military training and his proven penchant for killing animals, he is very dangerous to society.

This clip from 'The Full Metal Jacket' will always pop in my mind everytime this dehumanizing boot camp training is mentioned.

I don't think Americans are hated because of a puppy. I don't think people in Iraq are more outraged about a puppy than about the estimated 1,2 million civilians that were killed by violent action since the occupation started

Well I didn't need this to tell me that the armed forces invariably turns young people into blockheads, or gives psychos a chance to act out their psycho tendencies without prosecution.
My cousin went to 'do his country proud' in the army, came back months later - a busted hip, no compensation, and SEVERE mental problems owing to the total bullshit they throw at you. Took him years to straighten out again.
