new Extreme single "Star": keeping the Queen spirit alive

Ok,

it is not a proper Queen thread, but here I go anyway.

I love Extreme. Yes, Nuno Bettencourt, Gary Cherone, Pat Badger & Co. Always loved them and always will.

This summer will be very exciting for me, as August will see the release of brand new albums from my favourite musicians: QPR´s "The Cosmos Rocks" and Extreme´s "Saudades de Rock"

as I think that the main chorus is much inspired, as most of the music from Extreme, by Queen´s style

and it is a great song; and it is good to have this guys back; Gary´s a great singer and Nuno´s ... I´d like to be Nuno in my next life.

One more thing; one more Queen/Extreme coincidence: take a look at "Saudades de Rock" album cover ... and try to find out its inspiration in one of Queen´s album covers ... or just look at Nuno´s silhouette and try to identify it in one of Queen´s live albums

Ive got Pornograffiti in my collection, and although Im not sure how well that sound has aged, its nice to see a band who know what a guitar is for giving it another go, and they were very good at what they did!

I think on the whole I found them too cheesy to be a serious heavy band (which would scare off some metal fans), but not funny enough to be tongue in cheek (which would scare off a lot of the average record buying public).... or something - its not I dislike them, just found them difficult to classify, but it was most likely those things which turned a lot of people off.

Queen influence was always obvious in the harmonies, and they were good at the tribute concert from what Ive seen!

If you don't like them, get the funk out!

I loved Extreme at the time, Am I Ever Gonna Change from III Sides is a superb song. They were fantastic musically. The first time I saw them at the Freddie Tribute was good, but I though GC looked a bit of a tit doing HTF.

On another note...just listened to the new single, good comeback tune.......why the fuck isnt Nuno ever in greatest guitarist polls?? He pisses all over most of the usual top 20!

III Sides to Every Story was a very good Album, the next one was shite, hence the split. Nuno is an amazing guitarist. In a live situation, i think Extreme are let down by GC's vocals.... he tends to shout at times instead of sing.

I hated Extreme for "More than Words" cuz it got played way too much. Then they were so cool at the Freddie tribute that I forgave them and bought "III Sides..". Then they refused to reunite on VH1's Bands Reunited so I hated them once again...

As for the new song, a great deal of the backing is a ripoff of "Carry on Wayward Son" (the fast/heavy part of that song). The chorus vocals are irritating. But there's some nice work by good musicians so I'd give it 11.5 out of 33 & 1/3. A halfway decent tribute to one of the better bands of the 1970s, Kansas.

It sounds booooooring typical US mediocre music.

in fact the now song is similar to Warheads in certain bits.

I love Gary's voice ... in the studio. When playing live, he doesnt' reach the notes and seems to get tired soon; the same happened to Chris Cornell with Audioslave, imo;

And Nuno .. yes, we always see the polls with the greatest guitarists of all time and he never appears. Quite unfair. I think he´s a genius and love his technique.

III Sides was an amazing album and by then I thought we had the natural heirs to Queen, but they made a radical change in their next album and Nuno decided to quit.

I will enjoy their return; musically it seems they´re also returning to their roots, with the Queen-esque harmonies and all that stuff.

Let´s see what happens with the new record, but I guess it´s gonna rock

typical US mediocre music is Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Pink and all that kind of hip-hop/dance/soul/repetitive/freak shit

just pay a little atention to the guitar and bass lines of this song and you´ll find out it is 523 times better than any attempt from any actual self-called rock band from the US

Thats exactly what I thought as well. As for keeping the Queen spirit alive.... not quite for me Im afraid...
