Hello all.
Does anybody know when did the guitar start to be called 'Red Special' by Brian or anyone else for that matter?
Early interviews, as far as I remember, only referr to it as Brian's homemade guitar or something like that, but the name 'Red Special' should've come from somewhere...

As far as I know, he called "RS" in the early 80s. It's mentioned in Magic Years VHS when Bri and his father (RIP) presents the "old lady".
I'd like to know from any fans who had the right age at the time and before then....

He should've called it the Rickenstratelectro. Or the Danstratobacker.
Or the RoyThomasBaker for that matter ;)
I'm not sure when the name first came about but when I was going through the Queen years back in the 70's many articles I can remember used to call the guitar the "fireplace" because of it's orgins.
Red Special to my ear sounds a bit 80's. But that's a total guess without any basis in fact, so I e-mailed Brian about it.
ME: Hey Brian, thanks for those chocolates. There's a thread on Queenzone, we're wondering when the Red Special was named thus? Surely you might have some recollection on this vital part of the Queen story!
BRIAN: ... who's Queen?

I rarely heard Brian call the guitar the Red Special. He often refers to it as 'Old Lady' or indeed as a homemade guitar.
Interesting topic!
I think the name is fanmade

I've got a purple special in my pants.
It was actually called the Pee Pee Special.
I always thought the RS was a rather weak sounding name for the guitar. Is makes it sound like the guitar is a sissy,, which we al know it's not. Personaly I always like calling it the "Fireplace" It sounds tougher.
There's a reason all guitars can be referred to as an "AX" It can chop a crowd down the ground w/ one simple power chord. Lay em all to waste. Thats why guitars aren't referred to as a garden rake.
The "Old Lady" or "Fireplace" is much cooler than "Red Special" any day!
