It´s always the same with these people. Fuck the music or cinema reviews from any magazine. I hate them. And as most of us do, when I read a negative review of any movie or music, I know I will like it.
By the way, just listened to the album for the 2nd time. Glorious.
Don´t know what song I would throw out, really ! I like ALL the songs. Small is fantastic, as is Call Me, Glitter, Voodoo ... I´ve read some negative reactions here to We Believe ... I don´t care if it is a Bri´s Soapboax of 6 minutes , because Queen´s essence is floating all over this song, and I love it.
I´m starting to think that the weakest song is C-lebrity, and I also like that song since its first airing at the Al Murray show!
And I like to mention that the song that has caught my atention the most is Surf´s Up School´s Out ... wanna listen to it more and more times, there´s something special in it

All I can say is FAN BLOODY TASTIC - great songs, great vocals, great drumming and the most brilliant guitar work I have heard from Mr May for many a year.
For me it stands up on its own and alongside the collected works of the people involved great stuff!

It's a nice rock album with catchy tunes which is fun to listen to. It won't make my top ten favourite albums but it's much better than many other albums that have been released in the last years - and Paul Rodgers is one great singer.
I cannot help but listen to this album as a Queen fan. I think you do not really need to be a Queen fan to compare Cosmos Rocks to Queen. After all, it has "Queen" printed on it. In 2004 Paul Rodgers said what impressed him about Queen was that they always went to the other direction than the one you expected. And that is exactly what is not happening on Cosmos Rocks. It's an average album with nice tunes, a great singer and some cool guitar parts. It is dripping of stereotypes. Call me if you need my love, the stars are shining bright, it's time for peace...
"We Believe" reminds me of "The Voice", "Something That Glitters" sounds like Elton John, Surfs Up.. reminds me of "It's A Beautiful Day - reprise", "Cosmos" sounds like Stray Cats meet Status Quo, "Through The Night" reminds me of Sting etc etc etc. This never happened with a Queen album - the songs were always new , original and unheard - even Delilah. Where is the surprise element, where are the carefully built guitar harmonies, where is the sophisticated production? And where is the sense of humour? The frivolous fun element? The playful experimenting with genres and styles? Is it wrong to expect any of these essential Queen elements on a record that has "Queen" printed on the sleeve?
In 1990 Brian May said that many groups name "us as their influence now". I think nobody will ever name QPR as their influence because it's just not the same category. It's not a continuation, it's a side project. Let's not forget that Paul Rodgers was touring and Brian May was finishing his PhD while the album was recorded. For the side project of 3 great musicians, who meet in their spare time to jam in a studio and record some tracks, Cosmos Rocks is a great result. For me as a Queen fan it marks the end of a band I loved for over 2 decades. I miss Queen so much more on Cosmos Rocks than I missed them on the tour.

Like you guys I couldn't stand the thought of an available legal download while my album would arrive on tuesday. So I downloaded it and have listened to the album four times now. When I heard the early snippets I raised an eyebrow or two. But this album is GREAT!
Appreciation: I think it's a colourful album, lot of moods and styles. Great playing by all of the guys, love the fact that it's original. It's not Queen, but Queen + Paul Rodgers, so the sound is new, but I like it! I think they did a tremendeous job. Very strong first and last portion of the album!
Criticism: In general, I love the harder-edge stuff and the one-off tracks (Time to shine, Small, Call me). But the power/piano ballads are the weaker parts in my opinion. I also noticed that I like the first and last portion of the album, the middle section is weaker except for Call Me.
Oh ... and I'm definitely not a fan of Paul's lyrics.
01) Cosmos Rockin'; Nice rocker, is this really Roger's? Normally, back in the Queen days, the writer's vocals are louder in the mix of the backingvocals. So, yes it could be Roger, but also Brian if you ask me. Hope they will open the shows with this one!

03) Still Burnin'; not original if you ask your hardcore Queen fan, but I like this song a lot. Very catch chorus too! Good one Bri ;-). As a drummer, I like the drums and shifts a lot.
04) Small: One of my favourites! Catchy chorus, nice guitars, this is the only song that makes me wonder 'How would this have sounded if Freddie was still alive'. I love this song.
05) Warboys: Didn't like the acoustic bit we already heard, but after it's Queen treatment, I think this actually a fantastic song! Nice!! Great guitars again and good backing vocals!
06) We Believe: QUEEN MEETS LIONEL RICHIE??? YUCK!!! I think the chorus is catchy, but overall this is just TOO CORNY for Queen. Ow, and what's with the Palabras De Amor reprise? Did you hear the solo and the last part? It really resembles Palabras De Amor. Ah well, never liked that track too :-p
07) Call Me: Pure fun!!! Nice little original track, love it! They should play that acoustic on stage with only the three of them! Like it, I even think this is a possible hit.
08) Voodoo: The snippet made me feel this was gonna be a boring track that I would normally stick. But I actually like the vocals, even the lyrics ;-). It resembles the Impromptu that the band played during the '86 tour ;-).

10) C-lebrity: Roger roger roger ... he has some outstanding contributions to this album. More original stuff than Brian's actually. Normally, I don't like Roger's solostuff, but with Queen he always manages to deliver some golden songs! Way to go Rog!!!

12) Say It's Not True: Liked the stripped down version better, but I do like the guitar ending. Great song by Roger. Pity they use all the synths in the first verse.

Certainly, Queen+PR is not Queen, and your mistake is that you expect a new Queen album, which is impossible. Paul is not Freddie, mind you, and this is very good that he is not trying to be him. This is clever and rewarding. I remember when INXES found a new singer who looked like Hatchens (wonder if I`ve spelled the name correctly?) and tried to sing like him. This was silly and much inferior and just repulsive. Where is the band with this unfortunate singer? A flop. I think it is wise of the guys not to try to imitate Queen. And I am happy that they have reemerged on the musical scene and I will be able to see my dear May and Roger again. Paul included.
I agree, but sadly that's the main problem. It's not Queen, yet they still want to be Queen, so they've condemned themselves to be measured by Queen standards.

It would've been easier to them to be "Rodmaytay" or something like that and give us a great rock n roller, but they decided to play safe and only time will tell what will become out of this venture in the end.

I have to agree with YV, her reply is spot on. I listened to the album with an open mind, and believe me after being a Queen fan almost half my life I really wanted to love it, but the fact is, I just find it painfully average. I appreciate that it is not Queen, and is indeed a whole new animal, but with 50% of Queen in there, I was expecting at least a little magic that is evident in almost every album they have collaborated on in the past. Ah well, nevermind, at least I still have 20 odd previous albums to continue to enjoy, this is very much a listen and discard sort of album for me.

This is my exact opinion as well. I was affraid that we would hear a lot of one dimensional rock songs. That luckily didnt happen completely and i can appreciate some tracks. But i don't have a wow feeling overall at all. I hear some nice guitarwork from Brian. But there is no daring in trying really new things. Average songs, average production, average playing (drums, piano and basstrack), Paul's singing is ok, but is doing a lot of the same, he doesnt show new sides of his voice. His voice is just not so versatile.
I was really wondering how layered harmonies would have sound combined with Roger's, Brian's and Paul's voice. I haven't found it.
This album won't hurt anybody but also won't give me goosebumbs.

In 1990 Brian May said that many groups name "us as their influence now". I think nobody will ever name QPR as their influence because it's just not the same category. It's not a continuation, it's a side project. Let's not forget that Paul Rodgers was touring and Brian May was finishing his PhD while the album was recorded. For the side project of 3 great musicians, who meet in their spare time to jam in a studio and record some tracks, Cosmos Rocks is a great result. For me as a Queen fan it marks the end of a band I loved for over 2 decades. I miss Queen so much more on Cosmos Rocks than I missed them on the tour.

I suppose I'm the opposite. I'm looking forward to new studio material from Q+PR but not that interesting in hearing them live. My expectations for studio material were low -- I have never expected another News of the World -- so perhaps that's why I am not disappointed at the stuff I've heard so far. While I'm still interested in hearing what Brian and Rog can do with a new singer in the studio I've discovered though that I'm not that interested in listening to PR singing the older songs. It's not that he is bad -- quite the opposite -- it just doesn't do anything for me to hear him sing Bo Rap or AOBTD. I mean i was already bored with Fred singing TYMD, WWRY etc., why would I want to hear someone else do them ;)
It's a nice rock album with catchy tunes which is fun to listen to. It won't make my top ten favourite albums but it's much better than many other albums that have been released in the last years - and Paul Rodgers is one great singer.
I cannot help but listen to this album as a Queen fan. I think you do not really need to be a Queen fan to compare Cosmos Rocks to Queen. After all, it has "Queen" printed on it. In 2004 Paul Rodgers said what impressed him about Queen was that they always went to the other direction than the one you expected. And that is exactly what is not happening on Cosmos Rocks. It's an average album with nice tunes, a great singer and some cool guitar parts. It is dripping of stereotypes. Call me if you need my love, the stars are shining bright, it's time for peace...
"We Believe" reminds me of "The Voice", "Something That Glitters" sounds like Elton John, Surfs Up.. reminds me of "It's A Beautiful Day - reprise", "Cosmos" sounds like Stray Cats meet Status Quo, "Through The Night" reminds me of Sting etc etc etc. This never happened with a Queen album - the songs were always new , original and unheard - even Delilah. Where is the surprise element, where are the carefully built guitar harmonies, where is the sophisticated production? And where is the sense of humour? The frivolous fun element? The playful experimenting with genres and styles? Is it wrong to expect any of these essential Queen elements on a record that has "Queen" printed on the sleeve?
