finished downloading it - has anyone else?
cause I can't see any difference in the quality -even though this is almost twice the size of the other version...am I going blind?

while downloading I noticed that during the previews with vlc, but I thought once the download was complete it would be ok.
Damn it ... and yes, I can´t really notice that much quality difference between this and the DVD5

Stop downloading this version and stick to the DVD5 version.

OK I just finished downloading.
The video is longer in the beginning and in much better quality then the DVD5 version, however it's incomplete

A compilation might be a good idea.
By converting both versions back to avi and then creating a new edit before re-encoding to a high bitrate mpeg2 should be fine with little noticable drop in quality, so long as a decent mpeg2 encoder is used. Personally I'd use a Constant bitrate, not a variable.
If someone IS going to do this, may I ask that it is done in the same format as the source, which I believe is PAL.
It would be silly to convert it to NTSC.
