It wouldn't surprise me at all if people don't necessarily agree with either Rep or Dem, but vote for them because they know that they're the biggest parties and don't want to just throw away their vote to a party that may finish third in the race.

I think in every country politics is controlled by certain powerful people. I don`t think they would let ordinary people decide through elections who will rule the country. Or maybe every time they just strike a deal among themselves on who will win the elections this time.

*laughs* That's an interesting question actually. When the US system was founded, there were several parties. And the first President (George Washington) warned about the dangers of political parties even forming. But in true American form, we didn't listen.
There are lots of parties here in the US. The Libertarians, The Greens, The Tax Party...all kinds. They do exist, and they are valid in the sense that they normally get a few votes every election and have some people who support them. However, they are not valid in the sense that they don't get enough votes to win anything. The Democrats and the Republicans are the two biggest parties, and they take the lions share of the votes between them every year. Because of the way the system is set up, there are only seats awarded to the top 2 winners, which are always Democrats or Republicans; it's only a matter of who is on top. And the Presidential system is a "winner take all" system. Whoever gets to 270 electoral college votes wins.
I'd personally love to see a more parliamentary system, where seats are awarded based on a percentage of the vote and we finally get some other parties in Congress. But I'm pretty sure pigs will fly first.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if people don't necessarily agree with either Rep or Dem, but vote for them because they know that they're the biggest parties and don't want to just throw away their vote to a party that may finish third in the race.

No, the system isn't very democratic. But there is no country on the planet that practices democracy. Americans (the government in particular) love to say we are a "shining example of democracy"...but we aren't. We are a democratic REPUBLIC. That means we have the republican system of electing leaders to represent us. True democracy would be everyone in charge with no representatives, but that's considered too dangerous to work.
You are looking (well, writing to) a person who has been accused more than once of "throwing away her vote" because I voted for a 3rd party in the last Presidential election. Most people here think that if you are going to vote for a 3rd party, you might as well not vote at all. Given the way the system is, they have a point. But I did it based on principle; the 2 party dominance is keeping any kind of progress from being made, and killing any chance for anything to really change.
Most Americans, when it comes to politics, are lazy. There are TONS of people who vote for one party or the other because "their parents did", and never mind the platforms. A lot of others agree with parts of the platform of one party, but not all of it. But since they don't want to be accused of throwing away their vote, they vote for the party that mostly mirrors what they want. Then there's the segment of the population that doesn't vote at all.
