My bandmate Joshua (no relation to Macrae) absolutely dislikes the way they mixed the drums on Cosmos Rocks.
He liked the toms, but felt the bass drum didn't have enough boom to it, nor did the snare have any ring to it at all.

Oh for sure. Beats the hell out of the phake drums that made up a lot, if not most of AKOM, Miracle and Innuendo. I'm glad for one this album has live acoustic drums all the way. I love the live feel to it.
But I can see where Josh is coming from, because the snare in particular doesn't have a nice high-end ring to it. It's moreso for a fat booming sound factor.
Can't say I share his complaints as much about the bass drum however.

TBH, I can't recall them having that feature implemented at the time (late 2007/early 2008). The song would have been made in early 2008 I think, but the HQ feature implemented around this past summer or fall.
Can anyone back me up on that?

It's probably due to the fact that they Macrae used a decent amount of "no-noise" in order to mask any of the other instruments that bled through on to other tracks - for example, the guitar bouncing off of the bass drun skin etc. My view is that it's inevitable, given that they were trying (admirably) to play as much as possible as a live three-piece in the studio. Clapton's From The Cradle album is a good example of this, but the bonus there is that the tracks are pretty "naked" in terms of just putting out what was recorded in the studio as opposed to over-producing after the effect and masking out some of the recorded performance.

Ahh, OK. Josh would probably refer to that as 'gating', as he uses that on my drum tracks to reduce bleed between microphones (eg. bass drum against the other toms and cymbals).
Josh got new foam material and stuff that he will be installing soon, to make for less bleed and less ambient reverb in our practice/studio space (his basement) and give a bigger, more natural sound. Should make mixing easier for him.
