In terms of the outrageousness of the arrangements and sheer audacity of the compositions - Queen II.

In terms of pop sensibility - Sheer Heart Attack.

To some, SHA is the better record because they stripped down their sound to make it more accessible, but Queen II is undoubtedly the more progressive of the two.

Gun to my head?  I pick Queen II.

I'm with the poster on this one and it's the most famous poster of them all. The cover of Queen II.

I love SHA which is brimming with the expectations of a band who know they are on the cusp of greatness. The variety and humour on this album is terrific...ummm...this is a tough one. No, still going to plump for the white and black Queeny LP.

How good were Queen back then? Bliss.

Oh, I'm tearing apart! I am agree that Queen II looks more like an album, when Sheer Heart Attack is a bit promiscuous.
Queen II is like an epic story. It fascinates. It reaches you on another level. It's more about something subconscious, more about fantasy...
Sheer Heart Attack has these kind of rhythms which grab you straight away. The variety amuses and gives a joy.
Sorry, I can't pick...

Hmmm, Perhaps it's a bit closer than I thought, I wounder what other Queen fans think of both on the two albums and what their tastes are. Looks like Sheer Heart Attack is Most Popular but I will stay with Queen II for the crown of the rise of Queen 1974.

so tough  - I'll go with SHA - more accessible....the first side is ridiculously amazing....QII is great too but I'm in the minority when I choose side white 1st....(and then pretend Ogre Battle is really part of side white(love Nevermore too..) on SHA love having Tenement Funster, Flick of The Wrist, Lily of The Valley, and Now I'm Here all together - great riffs from Brian....I think there were some throwaway songs on both i.e. - Funny How Love Is QII ...and maybe a few to many Ah-AAAAAAHHs on that album  - I struggle with Lap of The Gods on SHA

Good question, I like both a lot, but I have to give Q2 the edge for it's uniqueness. It's just one of those recordings that stood out. I remember hearing it for the first time, and said to myself, "how the hell do they play this kind of stuff live"? I didn't see them live until the Races tour at MSG February 1977 and found out then.

WOW! Sheer Heart Attack seems like a winner, makes the albums survey statistics are not all that correct. But probably not a lot of those people who say Queen II is their fav album have discussed here.

SHA. A surprise round every corner.

Since SHA is my favourite Queen album of them all, I'll have to go with it.It's just so unbelievably good. While Queen II has some "fillers" like SOMEDAY ONE DAY, THE LOSER IN THE END or FUNNY HOW LOVE IS, SHA has not one single weak song on it. For me the album shows the whole variety of styles Queen were able to deliver. It's simply amazing, that all these songs come from one band.

I love every second of it. And forever will.
I pick Queen2 by a very slight margin, SHA also rules.  Also, some day one day and funny how love is are solid songs, but I agree loser in the end is pretty bad.
