As long as the US condemns the foreign and militaristic policies of Iran but not of Israel (although he has said he  "wants Israeli to change how it interacts with the Palestinians"), no US president deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.  And let's not even get into Iraq and Afghanistan.  Good deeds certainly don't cancel out bad ones.

No doubt Obama is a great visionary, and the best president the US has had in decades.  But he hasn't signed a peace treaty yet, so I really don't see the justification of a Nobel Peace Prize so early in his presidency.

All that said, the people who run the country are above the politicians.  It's not Obama who's going to make the change he says he wants to make.

Could not agree more. How can you get Nobel Peace-prize being president of a country that currently is in two wars? I'd get it if Obama ended the wars that Bush started but... nothing yet.

One local newspaper reported the news with the headlines "Obama wins Life Time Acievement Award on Debut".
He certainly hasn't done anything yet to deserve the Nobel. He's not the first person to talk about Nuclear Disarmament, and so far he has done precious little other than talking about it. Now he would certainly deserve it if he walks the talk, and he has 2 presitential terms to do it IMO. They should have kept his award aside till then.

I voted for Obama, and to this day I don't regret my choice but I seriously think it's way too soon to give him a Nobel Peace Prize.
Obama has shown persistence to bring diplomatic solutions to conflicts instead of military action, but he just hasn't done enough yet.

My guess is that he's only getting this award, so he can live up to it's reputation.

its an embarrasment and cheapens the award IMO

he has done nothing to deserve it,   and there are thousands of others that have worked tiredlessly for peace that should have been considered but werent

where is peace in the middle east?
more reduction of nuclear arms?
tensions eased between taiwan and china?
Iran and North Korea??

oh wait he gets it for 'image' and 3 speeches given in other countries....

oh baby thats change for you............

what have we done???

I'm sure he deserves it because he has signed so many peace treaties recently...

As I understand it, the nomination was made when he had only been in office a few weeks.

I didn't want to come across as being too harsh.  Yes, it was less than two weeks.

The US has been playing a role in all these issues, supposedly trying to end the fighting and restore peace in all these regions?

The only major conflict which has more or less come to an end during the last couple of decades, to the best of my knowledge, is the SriLanka - LTTE conflict. And they sought no help from the US..

Sometimes I wonder if the U.S., being the only super-power and all, is trying really hard to keep the animosity and war-like situation intact in different parts of the world by supporting one side against the other.

his nomination came two weeks into his presidency

which means its total BS-- its on image only and has nothing to do with accomplishments....

he should have declined it and not used it for propaganda purposes like he has....  by his own admission he doesnt deserve it.....

as far as conflict around the world-- its not just the US that keeps it going, conflict is big money-- from selling arms to countries natural resources-every country does it... granted some more then others...  has nothing to do with being a so called 'superpower'

agh well just proves politicians are politicians, they will say anything to convince you and get your vote,  then they turn around just like everyone else and turn the screws on ya....

the only change we got was a new person in the chair.... everything else will stay the same...  you watch.....

i thought people won awards because of a result, rather than a promise with a potential to be broken?

i like obama, so far i have no problem with him. but his presidency is so young, he hasnt even had the chance to truly bring about his plans, if he intends to do so (i never trust politicians). someone said that this is like "if someone were to say 'im going to write the best essay ever' and the teacher said 'yes you will'! and give that student an A before he even wrote it..."

pretty much what this is. i think its a bit ridiculous. if this were done in 8 years and the results of his presidency were good, then it would be deserved, but other than that, i think the whole "new type of president *cough* race/change *cough*" glorification has gotten old already.

I think they confused Barrack with Borat, who did great things for international relations, and brought us the Kazak national anthem, with its message of peace:

Kazakhstan greatest country in the world.
All other countries are run by little girls.
Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium.
Other countries have inferior potassium.

Kazakhstan home of Tinshein swimming pool.
It’s length thirty meter and width six meter.
Filtration system a marvel to behold.
It remove 80 percent of human solid waste.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place.
From Plains of Tarashek to Northern fence of Jewtown.
Kazakhstan friend of all except Uzbekistan.
They very nosey people with bone in their brain.

Kazakhstan industry best in world.
We invented toffee and trouser belt.
Kazakhstan’s prostitutes cleanest in the region.
Except of course for Turkmenistan’s.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place.
From Plains of Tarashek to Norther fence of Jewtown.

Come grasp the mighty penis of our leader.
From junction with the testes to tip of its face! .
