A Day at the Races has now become one of my favourite Queen albums and I have been listening to News of the World alot recently. I don't know wether the album is up with Queen's strongest (e.g Queen II, SHA, ANATO, Innuendo) or just an average Queen album. Persnonally I think it's a good album with greats (excluding WWRY AND WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS) such as Spread Your Wings, Sheer Heart Attack, It's Late....... Roger's Drumming is probably more technical than A Day at the Races, Freddie's singing is probably at par, Brian's Guitar work is amazing and John's Bass work is very good. Get Down Make Love does not impress me. I'd like to know what you think of the album, Is it One of Queen's best, Do you like the style and also about the lack of use of Queen's trademark harmonies which had been used in previous albums.   [/QUOTE]

I love Innuendo, some of my all time favorite songs are on there, but in no way is it as good as news of the world.
NOTW is a band in their prime,  and even the weaker songs like fight from the inside is better then Innuendo's Headlong, I can't live with you, Deliha, and the hitman.  Not that those songs are horrible by any means,  but these tune arn't on par with 70's Queen.

Some high points, but to me it was the first Queen album with substandard (by Queen standards) songs: Get Down Make Love, Sleeping On The Sidewalk, Who Needs You. Some of these are IMHO weak and underproduced, Who Needs You in particular sounding dangerously close to a demo.

First Queen album to feature an uninspired 'generic sing-along anthem' (Spread Your Wings), a style that they eventually could write/perform in their sleep (Save Me, Friends Will Be Friends, etc).

One of the best IMO. I love the eclective quality of it.

yea, another Queen album with lots of different styles to enjoy.  "who needs you" is another underated gem.

Sleeping on the Sidewalk substandard? Not sure many would agree with that. I think it's a great song. I wouldn't have said it was under produced, as I think it was intentionally a live take. In fact the whole album was intended to be a more raw, simpler production than its predecessors. That was what they were trying to achieve I thought?

I don't really know why people don't like FWBF. I quite like it, and I always liked the way it sat between WWRY and WATC at the end of the magic tour. I thought it worked well. And I thing SYW is a good song, better (or more interesting at least) live I would say.

I love Sleeping on the Sidewalk. One of my favourite Brian songs, it features IMO his greatest every lead vocal performance. It's one of the few songs which I'm happy that Brian or Roger sang instead of Freddie. I love Brian's joy at being discovered; it truly reminds me why Brian and the others became rock stars in the first place. As for FWBF, it's my favourite song on AKOM. I think it's wonderful!

We used to play Sleeping On The Sidewalk in an old band of mine.  Obviously a lot of people didn't know it but always appreciated when we finished.  Was great fun to play too. A favourite of mine!

Good album. Not as great as previous ones.

We Will Rock You - 7/10(but it has a massive impact)
We are the Champions - 10/10 - Great song
Sheer Heart Attack - 10/10 - High energy
All Dead All Dead - 7/10 - Quite good. I like the guitar
Spread Your Wings - 10/10 - Excellent
Fight from the Inside - 8/10 - Unique
Get Down Make Love - 6/10 - Queen's poorest song of 1970s
Sleeping on the Sidewalk - 8/10 - Good rocker
Who Needs You - 8/10 - Fun and easy to listen to
It's Late - 10/10 - A real classic
My Melacholy Blues - 8/10 - Interesting.

this album was a major letdown for me.

I know what they were trying to do, but lets face it, after the build up of their first 5 albums, this was a crash and burn and they never got it back.

We Will Rock You — 10/10 (very catchy song)
We are the Champions — 7/10 (highly overrated)
Sheer Heart Attack — 10/10 (my favourite from this album, great energic rocker by Roger Taylor)
All Dead All Dead — 9/10 (another one good Brian's ballad)
Spread Your Wings — 8/10 to album version and 10/10 to live version (guitars should be heavy, like in BBC one)
Fight from the Inside — 9/10 (not best Roger's song, but still very good)
Get Down Make Love — 8/10 (catchy tune and odd but very cool middle section)
Sleeping on the Sidewalk — 10/10 (very good)
Who Needs You — 10/10 (great track by John in same vein as Misfire)
It's Late — 10/10 (one of best Queen's rockers ever)
My Melacholy Blues — 8/10 (slow and catchy)

We Will Rock You (1991 Bonus Remix "Ruined" by Rick Rubin) (& all others) — 5/10 (really bad remix, but some new gutars makes it interesting)
We Are the Champions (Ruined by Rick Rubin) — 1/10 (crap)

This was my very first Queen album.  Well, I bought it on cassette.  :)
I couldn't believe how different the album was.  When I was in high school, Nirvana and the "alternative" genre had begun and people loved how "different" rock was with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc.  At least in America anyway.  I told people, "check out Queen's 'News of the World,' now that's alternative in just ONE album...in 1977!"  You've got the rocking anthems of WWRY and Champions, then the hardest rock song of Queen's catalog, Sheer Heart Attack.  Follow it by a completely different All Dead, bluesy Sidewalk, depressive Melancholy...it's amazing from beginning to end.
