I don't think you need to write a song to be emptionally connected to it.  There's loads of songs (by Queen and other artists) that I feel an emotional connection to in how they relate to my life and the events in it, but I didn't write them.  Conversly, I have written a lot of songs that when I perform them I don't actually feel overly emotional about.  Even though the song is not fully his own work, I'm sure that Brian would have had some input to the lyrical content anyway, especially as the release was under his name as a solo artist, and the content did actually reflect a lot of what he was experiencing in his life at the time.

It's funny you say that about the tribute version. I always wondered if the emotion got the better of him to the performance's detriment, or if he ALLOWED/WANTED the emotion to get the better of him to distract from what is for him, a very difficult song to sing live?

Not that the performance was terrible, it was quite touching to watch. But Brian, like Freddie, was a showman after all... and as you said he has shown VERY similar emotion nearly every time in LOML live. (Again, a song Brian never ALWAYS got pitch perfect, but which the emotion of the song could hide any bad renditions. When he did get it right it was nice to hear though... the QPR Super Live Japan version is nice).

II love brian as a guitarist/musician. Of course songwriter,  but most of the time don't like his voice (sorry brian!).  Sometimes i do like his voice. 39,  sail away sweet sister. love the song "good company"(despite his voice).  sometimes he makes me want to slit my wrist listening to him sing.   some examples are "too much love"  "love of my life"  He sounds like he's suicidal.  Not something i want to hear a lot.

I like both versions of this song

Freddie sings it very well and hearing and watching brian sing at the tribute show just showed the pure emotion he was going through at the time

Both versions are equally brilliant.

It's similar to what Roger said in AG commentary regarding Heaven for Everyone,about how Freddie could take a song "that much further vocally" and showed Roger his own personal limits compared to Freddie. And again, Roger does a great job on his Cross version... but Freddie really excels on it.

OFF TOPIC : I think HFE is one of Freddie's best ever vocals.

I like both but i think Brian's version especially at the freddie tribute was brilliant and full of emotion
