I have heard good and bad things about this musical, but am intrigued as to how Freddie is portrayed in it? Is he a main part, minor poignancy role, etc.? And, who plays him?

I saw the musical twice when it was released in Barcelona some years ago ... and there´s no Freddie character. So no one plays him.
Some references to the band, Queen, and maybe Freddie too, can´t remember well; but the musical isn´t about Freddie. It´s a fictional plot. In fact, the Red Special does play a major role, but not our guys :P

When I went to go see it they had a large bronze key throughout the musical that unlocked some secret, which was only revealed when they jammed the key into the golden Freddie statue's keyhole, which was on Freddie's ass, of course.
It reveals to them a picture of Freddie touching the Red Special.

He was portrayed as a fat black woman with her breasts dangerously close to popping out of her top during WWRY and Bo Rhap, and I for one am APPALLED and will never see the show again.

As people have mentioned, there is no Freddie character in the musical at all.
As a fan of musicals, We Will Rock You is one of the worst, in terms of story and plotline and is something that until recently, I promised myself I wouldn't sit through again.
The story takes place in the future. The world is ruined. And some strange strict government has taken over and there is no real music and musical instruments are not allowed. The story follows the tale of two rebels and their fight to find musical instruments. They find the Freddie statue which... points in the direction of where they can find musical instruments. They find a Red Special in a lump of rock in Wembley Stadium. And they all live happily ever after.
It's a very feel good musical, it's ever so upbeat... but lacks a lot. The only reason I went to see it recently is because my favourite west end performer understudies two of the lead roles, and he is fantastic.

In the musical Queen are just a part of the legend in the future and one of the musical legends told by the "rebels" says that Queen were executed for appearing on American Idol but Brian's last wish was to play a last guitar solo and so he could postpone his execution for several days. This always makes the audience laugh.
It's basically an 'let's add tons of gayness'-version of Queen The Eye. Same type of backstory, same type of bad execution. I'm proud to say that after almost 8 years I still haven't seen the musical and hopefully it will stay that way.
You have to admit that the uptempo rendition of "Everyone Has AIDS" is a standout piece of musical theatre.
My problem with it, as opposed to Mamma Mia which I love and which I'll soon be seeing for a third time (Yay!), is that it seemed to me that they choose the songs and then they wrote the story. The story is incredibly thin and completely unmemorable, and it should have taken precedence. It certainly did with Mamma Mia.

No matter how crap the musical itself is, it is still a musical. To say that it isn't totally undermines the very talented cast that perform in it, and they are exceptional this year.
