A few weeks ago I saw a commercial on tv for an online poker place... with Don't Stop Me Now, problem is that it was a crappy version with bad musicians playing and even worse achievement from the singer. This week there was a commercial for a new show on tv called Tough Love... and there it was again - Crazy Little Thing Called Love by some Frank Sinatra wannabe! My question is: If you want to use a song in some commercial purpose, is it cheaper to record the song yourself than to use the original? I can't think of another reason for trashing such great songs!
Related to this, swedish Idol-winner Darin (sigh) has made a dance cover, quite a big hit actually, of Coldplays Viva La Vida, and I came to wonder...
When an artist want to make a cover of someone elses song, do they just ask for the original artists consent or do they have to pay a huge stack of money for it?
Been working night, these type of things can drive you crazy!
You say you will if you could but you can't

Yes. It's cheaper.
