He always looked liked he wanted to blend into the background and not be noticed, kind of like how Freddie was off stage

Yes, but off-stage John was the diva. Always requesting more drugs, booze and girls (or boys).

That's true.

'I think being natural in the end is what always wins' as one of John's friends said.

Yes, 4 diverse, yet equally important ingredients went into the potent mix. Whichadds fuel to the argument about Q + PR. Maybe?

Well, that would certainly explain those yellow shorts.

I liked John on stage he just did his job and go on with it, maybe he knew the other 3 were the stars and he was happy to blend into the background, allbeit he wrote some great songs

I don't agree. Yes, in general maybe, but he had definitely his moments. Rainbow 1974 for example. I don't notice any shyness there. He seems to be enjoying himself and what's more: he is quite often in front of the mic (whether he truly sings or not is another matter). Also, the famous Wembley concert is another great example of him being quite outgoing (that is, more than Brian, to put it into perspective).
Especially the last two tours (Works and Magic), it seems he overcame his shyness. Not only videos prove this, pictures taken around that time as well. Just visit Bob's website for some clear examples.
His 'worst' years are probably 1978-1982. The Hammy 1979 concert is a very obvious one. God, even his clothes match his personality there.

I have to agree with the comment about that during the wembley show John was a lot more outgoing than usual, which is always good to see
Nothing wrong with his personality. Especially when you have a frontman like freddie, but he doesn't do much as a player live either. He's much better in the studio IMO.

Johns much better in the studio, he tends to simplify a number of his bass lines when playing them live.

A funny moment from John at Montreal when Freddie was telling the crowd that it was ok for them to move about and shift their asses a little, he then said you can get naked if you like and JOhn did a little riff on the bass, Freddie said Fuck off and then you could both freddie and john laughing about it
