I've never even uploaded anything off this site, primarily because of that. I've tried to read a couple how-to posts, but I'm as lost as you, brother.
You can't teach an old appliance new tricks. Bring back COBOL.

The problem I'm having is how to get the files to work: I successfully used Utorrent to download the Hammersmith 1975 concert, but I have "empty" files with no application to run them. I've tried using DVD player, Imovie, etc but it says they can't support the files!

There should be vob files in there. Try VLC media player to watch them. But you should be able to burn the entire folder to DVD with Nero or something of the like.

Download and install Media Player Classic or VLC Player.
Go to the directory where you downloaded the DVD and look for the .ifo file. Open this file in the player that you have installed.
Thats it!!
