I always thought the North Pole was part of Russia, not Canada.

Actually nobody owns the North Pole.  It's not actually land, but ice. Theres a x nautical mile (100? 200?) buffer around it where none of us Arctic upstarts (Canada, Russia, US, Denmark and maybe somebody else) can currently claim territorial rights.
