Hi there,
I am going to be a senior in high school this fall and I LOVE  Queen. I have been a fan of them since I was 11. I am now 17. I discovered them completely on my own and fell in love with them when I first saw the Bohemian Rhapsoday video. I was very attracted to the gothic, glamour, and art of the band ( mainly talking about 70's Queen...my favorite).

I want a very unique college essay so I stand out from everyone else. I have been trying to think of out of the box ways to incorporate my love of Queen into a college essay that also describes me. Even though I'm a teenage girl from Connecticut, USA I feel like I can relate so much to Queen because I'm not boring like the rest of my classmates because I very outgoing, 'sparkling', who loves art, beauty, gothic architeqture and I think Queen brought out my love for avante guarde things.

Any suggestions? Thank you my fellow Queenies!!!

You seem enamoured of Queen's visual style, imagery and artistic sensibilities, so I'd stick with those areas (rather than, say, their technical accomplishments).

You'd still need to narrow your focus considerably, by taking a position and defending it, using examples of Queen. The trap you can fall into is simply writing a biography and listing facts, which is boring and what Wikipedia is for. Also do NOT cite Wikipedia as a resource, even if you do cross-reference material there. No school or college I know of allows Wikipedia as a resource material because the premise is that anyone can edit it, which academically undermines its value (even if the facts you cite are accurate). In short, find books. You'll learn more and the professors reading your essay won't fail you.

So...topics...

You could demostrate how Queen's understanding of the importance of crafting their visual style, via costumes, concert lighting and album artwork in the early days was important not only to their career but to the glam-rock movement in general. Don't restrict yourself to Queen, compare what David Bowie, T-Rex and others were doing.

Or

Look at how classical works influenced Queen's imagery, visual style and lyrics in the early days. The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke, Freddie's Rhye works, the fairies, queens, kings and ogres explored in the first three albums. Queen weren't the only ones writing about mythical people and places: Led Zepplin and Rush did the same. Ask yourself in your thesis: how was the use of these fantasy elements important to Queen crafting its identity early on?

Or

Religion and Queen. It's an area which doesn't get a lot of attention and critical analysis, yet they have songs like: Jesus, The Prophet's Song, One Vision, All God's People, Mad The Swine, The Miracle, Innuendo, The Fallen Priest, The Key, Made In Heaven, Heaven For Everyone, My Life Has Been Saved. The band had differing religious perspectives and they were explored in varying degrees. Ask the reader: how religious WAS Queen? Was it a tool to create great work or were they offering their own opinions on the subject?

Hope these help.

Wow thank you for that !! You are certainly very smart...I wish I made myself more clear though..., I have to write an essay to get into college which expresses something about myself and I want to mention my love of Queen. But I am having throuble thinking of ways of incorporating my deep adoration of Queen while talking about myself...I know this may seem like an impossible question since no one on this site knows me but I was thinking of possible ideas ...

Here is an example

March of the Black Queen + The White Queen from Queen II are kind of related to each other in the since that one is about a elegant and myserious woman while the other is about a very dark and gothic woman...I could compare myself to both of the women in the songs...

I want to show the admissons officers how unique I really am!!

Just be honest then. There are no wrong answers when writing about yourself, your loves and your influences (unless you lie).

Talk about why Queen seems to speak to you. When I was in my teens and discovered Queen, it so fired my imagination and fueled my own creativity, driving me to work hard and create works of the calibre they demonstrate. The imagery of their songs and the intensity of their songs was a muse for me, conjuring people, places and stories when I was at my most open creatively. I saw new ideas and new ways of seeing the world, beyond my small town sensibilities. The theatricality and fearlessness brought me out of my shell. I also learned what it meant to be an artist, to have integrity and to have it challenged.

Speak from the heart.

An anecdote may help you focus your thoughts. Was there ever a specific moment when something in a Queen song or something you know about them helped you or allowed you some perspective?

I would avoid saying, "I'm a HUGE Queen fan," but rather use Queen in your description more abstractly and sparingly. As you say, like both the White and Black Queens, you are a complex and unique individual. The facets that make up this person called Sara are many, complimentary and contradictory. It's what makes you interesting!

And don't forget how Freddie's childhood roots and culture may have influenced the diversity of the music and how unlikely that his origins were the most unlikely grounding for a western rock star.

     Best o' luck.

Yes I did...and there is nothing wrong with that because everyone gets help on their college essay from teachers, guidance people but no one is as familiar with Queen like the people on this site so I asked for some ideas..not to write the whole thing for me.

She was like a proto-2019 new QueenZone fan. She's probably lost forever in the book thread or the one by Freddies old pal.
