Haven't been there for a while but I know it's dominated by animal rights etc but this really takes the biscuit -  a bunch of crap about a church, the usual bumpf about foxes, the usual crawly letters (all about foxes and badgers) and then I saw a headline "my dream car" and when I scrolled down I thought, hey! Brian's got his balls back! as this kick ass sports car began to appear. But my hopes were quickly dashed -- a little bit more scrolling and there's a tacky pic of a fox on the hood, like one of those awful t-shirts with geronimo or some other idealised Indian hugging a tree or an elk or something. What a fucking wimp Brian is. The gunslinger is dead and some old catwoman has replaced him. And not only that, on a different thread he had the bloody cheek to moan about internet sharing of old Smile recordings:

"You might hear it on early "Smile" recordings if they are out there on the Net (I'm sure they are - everything is, these days, offered 'under the counter' without any benefit to the creators of the music) ... like "Step on Me"."

I've an idea Brian ... release the fucking recordings yourself and we'll buy them! Otherwise shove your criticisms up yer fucking hole, where I;m sure there's a fox or badger or something in residence. When it comes out I'm going to stab the fucker in the eye.

Excelsior!

I flirted with starting a topic on that Smile recording comment when I read it the other day.  A lot of those old dogs don't understand how much these new tricks generate in sales of products that are actually available.  The bootlegged stuff has a huge part in igniting and sustaining the passion for product.

Does it help that the Save Me fox is on the hood because Lotus is giving Brian a car to spec to auction off for Save Me?  No?  Okay.

I love Brian dearly but I can't fault this.  'Under the counter', Brian?  Here's a thought - start selling things again.  Get over whatever mental fucking barrier it is, because you're a pro and we like to hear what you make.  I remember when you complained about "His Latest Flame" leaking - what the hell!  I loved that track!  Okay, it wasn't complete, but it had balls, man.  I think it was awesome.

Stop complaining about the current climate as far as music goes, because if you're not going to contribute to it then you don't have a say in how the business is conducted.  You risk being as irrelevant as Gene Simmons (his quotes about the music industry and the internet are utterly woeful).  Adapt, man.  You're clever enough.  Get back on that horse Brian.

*Sigh* I'm starting to realise why I stopped checking these forums nigh on every day or so. Interesting topics replaced with, let's whine about Brian or the state of greatest hits type releases. I wonder if I'm gonna take my brother's stance on this and stop checking here. It's just depressing to see this stuff.
Of course, I know someone's gonna pipe up and say, "it's our opinion and if you don't like it.." etc. Which is fair enough, of course. But when you've heard that same opinion for the umpteenth time, it becomes a little less bearable.

My stance? Let him live his life the way he wants without this becoming like (ironically) a tabloid paper column about the latest antics Brian gets up to. Tolerance people...tolerance.

Funnily enough, it's Brian's lack of tolerance that is part of the problem.

Aside from that, I like Queen because of their music and I couldn't give a stuff about foxes or badgers. If I express a certain amount of frustration at that, hey, that's up to me and you can ignore me or criticise or do what you like. But I'l continue to be me and post what I like, when I feel like it. Okay?

And as for Smile, you've completely failed to grasp the point so I'll make it again: if Brian wants to profit from the release of Smile material he should do what it takes to get that stuff released officially. Until then, he should keep a dignified silence otherwise ungrateful rotters like me might feel the urge to tell him where to go. More likely he's off to his bedroom to sleep on a mattress full of 100 pound notes while thinking up his next blog post about ths horrid fans who have the temerity to want to listen to some old Smile recordings.

Wasn't there a time Brian called fans downloading stuff "parasites" ?

Wasn't that to do with folk producing guitar copies with his name as part of the ad, i.e. a Brian May guitar, booster, etc.?

Btw Holly, I didn't write that you couldn't say what you want. I just meant, in general, I've heard these same ailings from folk before and have grown tired of it. That's all. Your post was yet another one which made me finally say something.
It's funny, this reminds me of the chat I had with my fiance tonight. People generally take the time to talk more bad than good. When was the last time someone spoke up about their fondness for Brian's soapbox? It's quite the opposite, isn't it? I mostly like it, but then, I've never written anything like that here. But hey, I can admit both good and bad points about the site and some things Brian rants about. It's his place to vent. I used to say to folk, don't visit his site for interesting music stuff cause someone will do that for you and post it here if it's news worthy. His site is about him, after all.

Oh, and I didn't mention anything about Smile.

As for your comment on Brian's apparent lack of tolerance, well, I must say, I admire that he does something on certain matters, i.e. foxes, badgers, etc. He hasn't picked easy things to fight and they're noble causes to get behind. I also like that he cares about this world and wants to do something, however small it may seem, that will make him feel better about it. There used to be a time when a great wealth of people didn't sit back so readily, as most do now, and fought these kind of things. Perhaps he belongs to that era?

Regardless, I wasn't stopping you from having your say, Holly. Heck, we all need to have our say on stuff, now and again.

It was 6-7 years ago, and Brian definetely stated that he thought bootleggers were 'parasites'  It might have been around the time they  were putting up some concerts at queenonline.  It's all water under the bridge now, but the comment certainly upset a lot of people, and p*ssed off plenty of others at the time.

He's used 'parasites' pretty liberally with any person or persons who profit off him, from the guitar knock offs, to fake music product like 'Greatest Hits IV', to downloaders, to leakers, to ticket scalpers and to people who get him to autograph stuff only to turn around and sell it on Ebay. Some of the complaints are quite valid, some are just life, and some are slightly seedy capitalism.  From his perspective though, I guess it all looks the same.  Must get tiresome to feel like people are wanting/taking from you all the time.

The smile recordings were released in 1997 as "Ghost Of A Smile" by Pseudonym records, so maybe Brian's complaining that no one is buying the CD and just downloading copies instead.
Surely after 13 years he can't be complaining that the CD was a bootleg release....

What a sad thread! I agree mostly with Adam but I just have to make some additional comments.

Who are you Holly to say what Brian should and should not write in his own soapbox? He has accomplished so much and still here you are throwing crap at him instead of giving something nice in return. Your critique is childish at best. You actually think it's a bad thing he works for animal rights and speaks about it!? That's just low... If you don't understand that we should treat both humans and animals with dignity then it's just too bad! He can choose not to release anything more and he will still be a great musical artist. He does not owe you anything. Next time you feel like posting crap like this, please spare us and don't push the "Post" button.

To those complaining about Brian using the word parasite. Well per definition a parasite is someone/something that takes something from someone/something else without giving something in return. That is actually what many "downloaders" are doing so what's all the fuss about.

Hope you all have a great day ;-)

=============================

Oh Jesus.  Is there anything more f*cking tedious than the sanctimonious whining about other people's topics?  If you don't find value in the topic, move on an start a thread that you find more worthwhile.  It's in no way complicated. Clearly a few people thought/think this a decent discussion.

Nobody is breaking into Brian's house and rifling his diary for his innermost thoughts.  People that publicly post on a blog invite opinion by definintion.  Furthermore, if you think Brian's campaign is all fairies and rainbows you don't read very critically.

And I always find it a bit dim that all who get their high morals all in a knot over some topic or other reward it by bumping it up with their sermons. Kind of stupid, no?

Here it is on Amazon.ca for a mere $96.82.  What could possibly be the motivation for seeking out a free copy? http://www.amazon.ca/Ghost-Smile/dp/B000007VVS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1286893506&sr=8-2

I resent the implication that I don't love animals. I love chicken, cows, pigs, fish, turkey etc., usually done is some kind of curry.

As for Brian, he can suck my plums: i'm off to download some more Smile tracks, even though I already have them.

Have a nice evening!
