I'm in love with Freddie Mercury's voice, especially when it sounds like this:

or

@ 0:48 -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNs362TcR2Y

So my question is, does ANYONE know of a singer that sounds similar to the above? I've heard of suggestions like Mika, but I honestly don't see it. I've also heard of Gary Mullen (runs the One Night of Queen tribute band), and although Gary sounds fantastically close, all of his songs are just re-hashed Queen songs and I'd rather listen to Freddie if that were the case.

With that being said, is there anyone that comes close? I don't care how big (or small) they are, anyone have some suggestions?

I can think of no-one with the impossible vocal range of Fred.

Try Marc Martel from Canadian band 'Downhere', song 'Surrender', especially at 0:50.

Try this guy, try to see that band live, you won't believe it when they do the Prophet song, they are nearer to Freddie as he was to himself...

i think i've just stumbled into sychophants corner again.....
fact: Freddie was different....but why would anyone say "do you know of anyone that sounds like Freddie?"
even Freddie styled his vocals on others....one of his greatest influences was Aretha Franklin...so you could say HE sounded like Aretha..
as for other singers who could do what he did....I'd take my hat off to Ronnie James Dio...excellent rock vocalist...esp live on stage (he'll be missed).....and if you want evidence of his power and range listen to the Black sabbath album Heaven and Hell......Die Young is as close to Freddie as i've heard...from 2:10

Not sure how to understand this, in case it's sarcasm I can only recommend to see that band live. They play quite big venues and usually get standing ovations. As this guy sings all the high notes that you never heard in a Queen concert. And they do it with big respect. A Youtube video give only a hint of what they do.

Btw, to me it doesn't make sense to search for someone who sings like Freddie. He was more than just "a voice", he also wrote all that stuff, he was an original. For me it's more interesting to find other "originals" with a very own style.

I suppose I should've elaborated.  It's not that they're lacking in talent as singers or anything.  They're actually quite good.  I hate to get bogged down in semantics though, but they're not 'closer' to Freddie, because Freddie was Freddie, whether he was fucking up or not.  That guy doesn't sound anything like him.  He's a fine singer though.

When I said "hilarious" it's because I misinterpreted what you were saying.  Oops, I guess.

"as for other singers who could do what he did....I'd take my hat off to Ronnie James Dio...excellent rock vocalist.."

I'm not sure how well Ronnie would've worked with Roger and Brian on a personal level, but I'll say this much - purely in terms of his instrument, he was totally qualified.  Listen to "Leroy Brown" and then listen to "Shotgun Boogie" by Elf.  In fact, a lot of the Elf stuff really reminds me of 70's Queen.  Even when he was in Rainbow, when you take a song like "Long Live Rock and Roll" and then run it up against the demo "Feelings" by Queen; Dio totally would've sounded great with Brian and Roger.

I'm still rather amazed that Dio wasn't at the Freddie Tribute.  Maybe his invite got lost in the mail.  He would've sung everyone else off the stage, no contest.
