Being in gay clubs at that time wasn't as much fun as it used to be, because fear was looming. Also, by 1986 it had been common knowledge how the virus was transmitted and gay men had already taken to using condoms. Whether Freddie knew at that time that he had been HIV+ himself or not - he knew for sure that the time for being careless was over. That, to me, is the most likely reason for him returning to London and settling down with Hutton.
