Brian re justin beiber covering Bohemian Rhapsody

Just stumbled upon that idiot Justin Bieber's copy of Bohemian Rhapsody and somebody asked Brian on his website why he allowed it and apparantly anyone can copy anybody's songs as long as it not significantly changed

its just awful

But he HAS significantly changed it.  It has gone from an absolute masterpiece to this pile of shite.  I want to cry.

There's nothing wrong with Justin Bieber.  He is simply a marketable image - a product, like a Big Mac.

The business just churns out people like him because they know he'll make them a lot of money.  If parents taught their kids that super-fads are pointless and will have no real enduring effect on their lives, then things like Bieber wouldn't need to exist.  He's therefore just a reflection of the very people he's being marketed to.

I'm not an expert on copyright law, but I'm certain it is correct that anyone can cover a song. "Significant changes," as I understand it, means altering lyrics. You don't need permission to cover a song if the lyrics are basically the same as originally written. You do need a Mechanical License, and do have to pay royalties to the songwriter, if you release the song.

If it's an instrumental work, or your only covering the music (ie doing an instrumental cover of a song which has lyrics), these same rules apply if you release it. 

I'm not 100% sure what the exact copyright laws are toward posting your covers on YouTube or your website free of charge. I do think a lot of artists don't care (or are even flattered) if you cover their songs as long as you're not making money on it. If you are, they'll expect their fair share of the royalties. 

Some changes that don't require permission would include reversing genders ("he" to "she") if the singer goes from male to female (or vice versa), repeating choruses or verses and re-arranging them (starting with the chorus instead of starting with a verse), and minute changes. 

It gets sticky if you start changing proper nouns (city names or a person's name, beyond the scope of simple gender reversal) or rewriting lyrics, or adding whole new lyrics. If it's an artist who has a record contract and a manager or management company, copyright lawyers are consulted to sort out the finer details. I imagine if there's any doubt or a danger of law suit, the advice will be, "Pay for the license, get permission and pay the royalties."

In Beiber's case, I'm sure his lawyers covered his butt with Queen Productions and/or Freddie's Estate long before the song saw the light of day. I haven't heard it (and don't care to), so I don't know how different it is. I do know there are some (in my opinion) dreadful covers out there. Madonna's "American Pie" comes to mind. That's the price we pay for living in a free society. For every bad cover song, there's a good (or great) cover out there. The same laws that allowed for Freddie's "The Great Pretender" also allowed for William Shatner's "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds."

What's bad about him is not the type of person he is but how he is famous and does absolutely nothing. It's all about his looks and he doesn't deserve to be famous. He is stealing fame from thousands of people who have talent and deserve to be famous.

Sadly, music is a business. The companies with billions of dollars invest in what will provide the biggest financial return. 

In a perfect world, all honest talent and hard work would be rewarded appropriately, as opposed to "stars" being made as if in a factory.

The consolations I take from the existence of prefabricated artists is that they tend not to last long and their audience tends to grew out of them, eventually seeking deeper and more meaningful music.

I have serious doubts that this alleged Bo Rhap cover even exists.   It seems to me to be an extension of the YouTube obsession to make this kid the epitome of everything wrong with music today and by extension everything right with music in the past.  Rose coloured glasses to be sure.  Teen idols have been around for at least 60 years and in that sense Bieber is nothing new.  In his kid teen idol way he's even paid some dues.  He used to busk in a small Southern Ontario town and wrote some songs in the same period.  He has some charisma and can hold a tune and he gives tweens something to listen to that parents can be comfortable with before they're thrust into the worlds of hypersexualized artists like Gaga and Rihanna etc.  He's not the end of the world any more than David Cassidy or Leif Garret was the end of the world back in the 1970's.  Incredible, enduring music was created in countless parallel tracks in that decade alongside the teen idol fluff. Is that happening now?  It certainly doesn't feel like it to the same degree.  Really, I think what's wrong is what's going on outside of Justin Bieber, and not Bieber himself,  who is really just holding the latest incarnation of a position that's always been there.

Actually, it's not that bad. I bet if someone didn't tell you it was Justin Bieber you would think it was rather good. But people, how do we even know this is Justin Bieber? It could just be a person covering this song trying to sound like him.

Plenty of people are rich or successful without having done much.

It's not like he's a bad person or anything.  It's the record company executive assholes that we should be complaining about, not a teenager caught in the middle of it.
