Why is the size so small for a two hour video?  I was expecting a full dual layer DVD of 8GB, so I guess the original source from the broadcasters is heavily compressed.

That is indeed the case.
In order to fit more channels on a transponder, lower bitrates are used.
The bitrate here is around 3 Mb/s which is typical for standard quality broadcast.
BTW also on digital cable or terrestrial broadcast similar bitrates and the same MPEG compression techniques are being used.
