It could be so superficial, and subjetive, but... you didn't think the light crown in Return Of The Champions had one of the better lights in a gig? and not only in a Queen gig. I just watch the guitar solo in I Want It All, and is... in a lot of songs the effect are great too. i know the ''return'' lighting was better than in Kharkiv (any way i prefer that gig) but the only stages at the same level for me are the U2 ''Claw'' and the Muse ''Pyramid''...
What do you think?

Just checked it out, and you're right .. that was one hell of a light show, particularly during that spot of the song.

I thought the stage and light show at the Van Halen tour in '07 was pretty awesome myself.

I want it all was one of the highlights of the 2005 tour. Dropping it from the setlist for the U.S. 2006 tour was a bad call.

The crown used at Earls Court and the NOTW tour is probably my favourite by Queen. Certainly for its time, it was quite spectacular.

My cousin Joe was the lighting director from thr ADATR tour up to the end of the Japanese tour in 79. He helped design the rigs up to that point and said that the Earls Court rig was so huge that in order to get it out of the venuse they had to cut it down into smaller pieces. The one he helped esign for the NOTW tour was scaled down so it could be transported from city to city. GO to Bob's site and checlk ot some photos of that rig from Toronto and Dortmond Germany. GREAT photos!!! THe "pizza oven "  I don't have much info on even though he and I talked about it back in February. I know that for most shows the rig was suspended from the ceiling at those venues that could support it but for shows such as Budokan, the ceiling couldn't support the weight so the crew had a system built where the rig could be held up using four giant posts and it could withstand the weight. On at least one occasion one of those posts ended up twisting and bending due to the weight. This occured when the rig was being raised above the stage. He told me he has a photo of Crystal standing next to it with it all bent out of shape. If I ever get a hold of his trunk with all his Queen stuff in it you can be assured I'll be sharing this stuff with you guys!!!

It was the one song I really missed hearing (I Want It All) when I saw them here (Chicago).

I was so glad it was included (and in such, grand fashion) on the Return of the Champions DVD.  One of the best live performances I've seen of any song actually.

ELO had the crown lighting rig after Queen had finished with they used it on their 92-date world tour, with an enormous set and a hugely expensive space ship stage with fog machines and a laser display

Good to see you here, Andy.  Thanks for the pic.

Always wanted to ask you - any chance you could transfer your Cleveland '77 tape in stereo?  It's the best version I've ever heard of the board recording, and would love a clean copy.

Queen were due to play here in Cork in '79 but the ceiling and roof of the city hall wouldn't take the weight of the pizza oven rig. Unfortunately they had to cancel and played Dublin only.
