There are great stuff from well-known bands like The Beatles and Queen, but there are also great stuff from bands that were never quite popular. That does not make any of the obscure stuff any less!
So I think we should share the obscure stuffs we've heard and really think they're great.
One such band is Camel. I've only heard their album "Mirage" and it's incredible.
The most obscure band I've discovered is Il Baricentro from the Italian jazz/prog fusion scene of the 70's. They're incredible and I'm sure not many people have heard of them.
There is this user on YouTube called darublues. You should subscribe for some obscure Rock and Roll music. Immensely brilliant. http://www.youtube.com/user/darublues

cool idea for a thread :) My fave 'obscure' music is mainly tiny artists who are just not overly well known, and don't have many recordings. Sarah Bates Evoy has this incredible voice, just beautiful. She writes, plays and sings, and her voice is just unreal. I'd love to post some of her stuff, but its not even on youtube. She has one cd, but its really hard to get. But if you ever by a miracle find her cd 'Courage' its amazing.

Most of the stuff I listen to is more on the obscure side these days. Some of these artists have actually had hits, but even still are largely forgotten by mainstream audiences. I've ranked them based on reactions I've gotten from people ranging from "Oh! That one guy that did that one song!" to "You made that up, right?" and beyond. I would recommend all of them to everyone ever.
Semi-obscure: Matthew Sweet Toad The Wet Sprocket Harry Nilsson Warren Zevon The Nazz
Obscure: Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich The Jayhawks Gerry Rafferty The Posies
Very obscure: Big Star Buzz of Delight Emitt Rhodes Plumtree Plasticland
Super obscure (Nobody knows these bands. I'm pretty sure I actually DID make these ones up.): The Beatles Queen Billy Joel Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ABBA

Oh, also Shirlyn Tan, purely for the sheer power of her voice. She has this incredible almost husky, but amazingly powerful voice. She's from Singapore i believe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f59ATP8-jNc

Not obscure exactly but someone on another messageboard I frequent suggested a band called Noah and the Whale for good relaxing/chill out music. Great stuff. Check their popular youtube vids.
And it goes without saying that Frank Turner is amazing.

And search for Frank Turner's cover of I Want to Break Free. A great interpretation.
I think him, Roger Taylor and Morrissey are the only men on the planet I would sleep with if they asked.
I have said too much :-(

I consider Morrissey "punch on sight".

"I consider Morrissey "punch on sight". "
He is definitely a 'Marmite' person (or should that be Vegemite?)

Not Obscure, but not exactly well known either, a band i can't stop listening to are Justice. I can hardly name a bad song from them, except maybe valentine. Their 'Planisphere EP' is unreal.

Not really obscure, but this cover gives me goosebumps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQDhH8-z14Q
