I keep searching the web for a update about the Freddie Mercury Biopic and I'm finding nothing. They were supposed to start filming by now. When you look up Sacha on the IMDB site, there's no mention of him even being in it. Does anyone have any info?

Well apparently over the last few months they decided it would be called "A Kind of Magic" but other than that I haven't heard anything new about it. I don't even know if that's the final title... i sure hope not.

I agree.   This will not see the light of day... at least not in a theatrical release.

I'm curious why you think it'll be shelved/never released ??

I'd hazard a guess and say that BM and RT have lost interest in this movie.

From the  news reports earlier it looked like it was still in the scripting stage...I think the script is still  being worked on, which is why we don't have news yet. Besides it's a rather touchy issue they're dealing with here: it's about Freddie and his relationship with the band, and that's bound to raise SOME hackles with Brian, Roger and Deaky if it's not done a  certain way, so I would understand why the scriptwriter would take time and not say anything yet. I guess only once the script is  actually done will they get down to casting: so far it's only Sasha Baron Cohen who's been chosen for a role, the rest of the band haven't even been casted yet. I'd say we'll get news on this only much, much later.

The a kind of magic title seems pointless to the movie as it based up as far as the time live aid,
well before magic was even released

Any Way The Wind Blow sounds perfect for this one...hope they use that or something else that's equally catchy!

Why?

Because NO ONE (except those here on Queenzone) will be remotely interested in this.  And anybody that is still interested is wanting the later years covered.

I'm surprised that Di Niro's people couldn't see this before committing to it.

That said, there's still a market for the Direct To Video release.  But that just means it will be Sacha Baren Cohen and a bunch of no-names, so the acting level will be severely crippled as well.

I think they should have Mark Martell doing the singing voice overs.

I'm not sure that's true.  I think Freddie has become a cultural icon, and if it is a well written film with positive buzz I see no reason why it wouldn't be received like 'Ray' or 'Walk the Line'.  Even allowing for the potential for less interest on North America there are huge swaths of the rest of the would that would be keenly interested.  I understand the feeling of an incomplete story arc without including Fred's illness and that remarkable period in the history of the disease, but if you try to include too much it becomes a necessarily shallow film.  I think people are less drawn to these things for chronologies of the subject's' lives and more to learn things both unique and universal about extraordinary people.

Such Grumpy Guses about the movie!

Straight-to-video? Really? With this cast and crew?  Maybe an HBO Movie, but even that would be pretty cool.

They've got a great production team, and Academy Award-winning screenwriter, and an A-list actor. This is about as likely to be made as any other movie at its current stage, but everybody thinks it's been spiked because it's a couple months behind schedule?

That's pretty ludicrous, as is playing clairvoyant and reading Roger/Brian/Beach's minds.

The movie sounds great and interesting to me, and judging by those outside the Queen fan world, it seems likely others do, too. Didn't all of you get links from your non-Queen fan friends about the SB Coen casting?  Or was it just me?

Anyway.  I don't know if it's a go or not anymore, but I certainly HOPE it's a go.  I'm looking forward to it!

C'mon, GratefulFan....   I love him too but no matter how great he was, Freddie will never be the cultural icon we so want him to be.  Sure WE compare him to Elvis or The Beatles, but there really is no comparison.   The greatest singer in the world (possibly FM) will never reach the status of Ray Charles, or the aforementioned Elvis.

And RAY didn't do that well, so why would an obscure movie about Freddie do any better?  In fact, I can't think of ANY music-oriented biography movie that did that well.  Even though there will be people on here that will tell you Fred had more impact on the music industry than anybody, it just simply isn't true.  They put out twice as much music as Led Zeppelin, but plenty will tell you that LZ had more influence on Rock & Roll than Queen.

The only way this movie could happen is if they turned it into a comedy.
