Your first point is very reasonable... then i think rainbow was filmed on 2" tape and LATER transferred to 35 mm for cinemas! (that´s why we always thought it has been shot on 35 mm)

The BBC had a habit of wiping videotape in order to reuse it again. At that time they did not envisage that shows potentially would be released on formats such as VHS and DVD. It's amazing what they were able to restore from old kinescope film.
