If this passes, it will be a complete game changer.  We will one day be saying, "Remember that great period in our history when information was unlimited and free?"

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2012/01/17/f-sopa-canada.html

Are any major news outlets in the US even covering this? With all the money big business stands to lose if SOPA doesn't pass, I'd doubt it. They're just standing behind the issue of piracy because it's a convenient scapegoat.

Rupert Murdoch talking about ethics was my laugh for the day.

Wikipedia is shut down for a day, so millions are now aware. Mark Zuckerberg posted a facebook status related to the situation, but if he's a man of his word then he'll shut down Facebook for a day. Suddenly virtually everyone in the western world aged 10-50 would be aware.

At least Obama is against this, and he says he'll use his veto power if necessary. This is encouraging.

Discuss. Spread the awareness. This is a biggie.

Piracy schmiracy.    Read deeper into the bill.  This is actually about US privilege and world domination, and in fact stands for "Stop Others Peeing on Afghans".  It's true.  Well, no it's not.   So I don't think the real SOPA will become law as is, and if by some freak event it did I think there would be widescale civil disobedience by smaller and more agile service providers and some of the best computer science minds put on ways to circumvent it a la the Anonymous group. It's madness the way it's written.

Of course, hence me using the word "scapegoat" earlier.

The people lobbying to have this bill passed are the same people who created the illegal downloading software like Kazaa and Limewire after the Napster fiasco, saying "look at all the money we've lost because people used this horrible software."

Let's hope sanity prevails.

Is it to do with information being shared for free though? Or is it to do with copyrighted material being stolen on an epic scale?

Just playing devils advocate...

Looks like Megaupload might have been the first to be shutdown. See Lord Fickles thread

It's both. Both are included in the bill. They're just hiding behind one to achieve both goals.

SOPA and PIPA were dropped, ACTA however has been signed in many countries last time I checked, including mine. If so, we're all fucked..
