Megaupload site shut down

[b]Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.[/b]

The site's founders have been charged with violating piracy laws.

Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue. The firm says it was diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.

The news came a day after anti-piracy law protests, but investigators said they were ordered two weeks ago.

The US Justice Department said that Megaupload's two co-founders Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and Mathias Ortmann were arrested in Auckland, New Zealand along with two other employees of the business at the request of US officials. It added that three other defendants were still at large.

Time to move file hosting servers to Russia. We now see the same stupidity like 5 years ago when the music industry had tried to fight the new technologies. Now the movie industry refuses to recognize the possibilities of web hosting. They will lose billions until they realise that you cannot ask people to pay 15 $ for a movie theater ticket or wait 2 years for a badly synchronized foreign TV series on DVD when users can just as well download them from the web shortly after airing. I cannot say I am sorry for them although I personally do not download movies or TV series. They should take a closer look at the music industry laying in agony before fighting file hosters instead of modernizing their outlets. The governments, of course, are all too happy to test censorship options under the pretense of protecting copy rights.

Obama says he's against SOPA... for now.

But it is rather disturbing that the US can issue arrest warrants for people in New Zealand when the copyright laws of the two countries are not the same. I believe the term is hegemony.. ?

exactly.
How come they were able to arrest them though? Esp as the legislation hasnt gone through yet? I haven't really been following it, but can you arrest in other countries? Or do you just have to contact the other country and get the ppl deported back so they can be arrested in their own jurisdiction? I really need to watch the news more...

I don't think there's technically a relation between SOPA and the Megaupload thing. It's just them flexing their muscles.

Also multiupload.com has problems at the moment with uploading to their services :(

Hopefully it has nothing to do with the Megaupload-problems.

Add Filesonic.com to the list, you can only download files you have personally uploaded now.

Stick to the torrents, they cannot be erased.

I'm busy a few days with replacing links in the several megaupload and multiupload topics.
It's really unbelievable how much links are not working anymore.
I try to replace them all with working ones.
uploadmirrors.com seems to work good (it uploads also to rapidshare.com). Let's see how things will develop in the next weeks/months.

BTW....sorry for spamming the board from time to time.
After each batch of "spamming" I will bump up the new and actual topics (like the one from Bob last week) !

Most of the popular filesharing sites are down - Megaupload ofcurse, then filesonic, fileserve, as well. this is probably why multiupload is not woring for you, Bokkepoot. SO I would wait a-while before uploading anyhting.

Only rapidshare, of the big ones, seems to be unaffected (so far). The reason could be that rapidhare has already been through its share of law suits and has survived. so they probably they now run their service in such a way that they cannot be help liable for how people use their site.

On the other hand, when these sites start deleting files/stopping their services on a war footing right after the MU action, does i not amount to admission of guilt?
