At what point did Roger START to go senile?

Is it just me or has Roger completely lost the plot? Or perhaps he just has an overdeveloped sense of irony. I certainly wouldn't classify Queen as a cynical band.

Remember back in the 80s when Roger said in interviews that he was fiercely against music videos? "Video is detrimental to the music" was his exact quote. But then Queen sorta failed to practice what they preached and went on to make some of the best and most overindulgent videos from that decade. Whaaaaa?

And then how about Roger's stance on dance music? "Not my favorite thing" was his exact quote. Fine, Hot Space wasn't his idea, it was all Paul Prenter's fault. And of course, 'A Kind of Magic' was never meant to turn into a dance/pop tune. He blamed Freddie for that. But then consider the electrofied synthfunk of 'The Invisible Man'. What was your excuse then, Rog? Queen's drummer seemed to be incapable of gaining creative control over his own songs. But what was the silent rule? Something about 'the author usually had final control of his songs'. Who was the invisible force on the housed-up 'You Don't Fool Me'? Did Freddie's ghost creep back into the studios in Montreux and remix it? Then fast forward to 1998 with the release of Electric Fire, your own solo album for God's sake. There were more than a handful of songs on that that wouldn't sound too foreign on a dancefloor.

Away from music and onto political/social statements. How about the song 'C-Lebrity'? It was a vicious attack on kids who appeared on no-talent hack TV shows. It had bite! But then Roger goes out and creates his very own talent show?? Whaaaa?

Why is Roger forever putting his foot in his mouth? I don't understand the guy. His philosophies are commendable but his actions belie them.

Yeah, Rog Has even said that he hated the whole "Manufactured" Act thing, saying many a good band dosen't get a "look in" because of the likes of "Simon Cowell" It's even a major plot device in Queen's own musical, so why then did, Queen, appear on "American Idol, Canadian Idol & X factor"? & even have performed with "Five, Will Young & Adam Lambert?" & as you have said, Roger's whole "Queen Extrazganza" thing is to create a manufactured band? Hmmmm?????

- I thought it was Dave Richards who was largely responsible for You Don't Fool Me??
- He might've sold out a bit on his music video stance, but to be fair he's usually the one who looks least impressed to be there (or, counter-intuitively, the one who's trying hardest to cover for it).

Thumbs up there Zebonka! But I also believe, despite that Roger is taking the piss on the whole x-factor or whatever hits the telly shite, or concept. Roger is in my believes the only Queen member who stand closest to his believes, okay with a minor hick up with the xtravaganza.....

I used to think he was just pushed into doing shit by Professor Perm but I'm not too sure these days.

K seriously. Roger said that sometimes the video thing doesn't work well with what was meant to be in the song. But duh!!! He knew it was part of the business. I don't know anyone in any business that doesn't have to do something they don't like.

Yes, Roger didn't like music videos. If you look back at most of them he looked very unhappy and seemed to be bored out of his mind. But he isn't the only one in the group who has a say on what the band does and Freddie was very controlling. Also, it almost permitted for a band to produce a music video along with a popular single (especially in the 80's with MTV starting). If not, it risked the the entire song falling flat.

Yes, Roger also wasn't a fan of dance music either. And yes Hot Space wasn't his fault and neither was AKOM (though I disagree on it sounding like a dance/pop album). But Invisible Man, in my opinion, sounds the least bit like a funk/dance tune. It has electric sort of beat to it (synthesizers and such) but the song is very Rock n Roll, IMO.

The whole "You Don't Fool Me" argument falls flat because Roger nor Brian had anything to do with the song. The track was constructed entirely of older recordings and was put together by David Richards (Queen's producer).

When it comes down to it, this is stuff Mr. Taylor said over 20 years ago. Anybodies opinion can change. But if your talking about Roger going senile, well... It is about time for the man to start coming down with alzheimers... He is kind of old...

being a little bit controversial and contradictory does not equate to senility....in my book it's fairly typical of most rock n roll stars...especially stars who wish to maintain or re-raise a profile
