I got somre more thoughts...

The real wizard wrote:

That said, naming names isn't such a big deal. After all, we don't share recordings for the accolades. We just want the music to be spread for everyone to enjoy. But if someone is really keen on having their name attached to a recording, they'll be sure to include that info in the info.txt file.

That's right but I think it makes collecting a little better arranged if you have the names attached to see on the first view which recordings you have without checking the lineage, but it's only my way to optimise the organisation of MY collection, maybe not helpfull for everyone.

I do have a strong fear that mediafire as well as rapidshare and other services will be closed soon or even files with references to specific artists will be deleted as seen in the mail posting above. I suppose that megaupload was just the stumbling block, music industry will react: for example if like the Live Killers you download Frankfurt, Collogne or Berlin instead - they are much more authentic, if you like Wembley why not take Mannheim in equal quality for free? Queen is only the tip of the iceberg as the internet is full of boolegs from all kinds of artists. Even therefore a change in copyright laws is imaginable.

Torrents could be the answer to the questions but to be honest they are not that easy to handle as one klick links. I'm not a dumb cluck but still have problems how to re-seed for example. I tried to create torrents - not only on QZ - that do not work for some reason. Mediafire provides a file manager - how do you want to arrange the torrents? What would be good on mediafire, it's only one account that means one moderator which does not lead to confusion and disorder but also means that all work is up to you - and if mediafire fails the whole project is down (again).

b.t.w. torrents imply the meaning or impact of a community! The whole thing will work better as more and more users will get involved...

What about the audio section of the Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org/details/etree). I don't think this will be out the air very soon.

This is the way to go:

IMHO, the name queenbootlegs.com isn't a good one.
You would not want the word bootlegs to be associated with it.

Well, we can use queen-boots.com! So the people would think that it's an epic website that sells boots to queens. LOL

That's a great idea. I second it.

I'd be happy to offer my skills in writing a full service database and content management system including adding/maintaining/indexing/searching etc. We could design it however we wanted and ensure near perfect quality control in how the information associated with each recording is gathered and presented.  I pitched something like this some time ago to index all the best Queen information and resources on the net, but maybe just an initial focus on live recordings might make more sense.  Each boot could include links to the appropriate concert on queenlive.ca or other internet resource if desired etc.  In short we could make a completely custom dream system based on the wealth of knowledge right here.

Let me know if any of that sounds useful/helpful.  Would be glad to pitch in,

Sounds pretty awesome and i am sure every queenfan would be very "grateful". And the concerts that will be available on this database, are these the ones which have the best quality of each show available?

There is already a listing of all the bootlegs here:

http://www.queenconcerts.com/collection/downloads.html

It just needs the help of everyone to keep it complete by submitting new threads for the concerts under the "submit new" click.

The problem is where to park the bootlegs for the people to access:

1. at a file sharing site for one click download which is now at risk of being shut down

2. at everyone's hard disk to seed via a torrent.

The next consideration is how to put the new updated links upfront in the old threads so that it does not get lost in the posts subsequent to the update post. I think it would be alright to do a new thread with a link to the old thread so as to save re-writing the setlist information etc and to give credit where it is due.

We could do much, much better than a list where people have to bump threads.  We could have a facility to add, remove, describe, guided downloads for newbies who don't know where to begin to collect, flexible searching on varied and multiple criteria, filtering on tour, quality, year etc, featuring of newest uploads, email notifications for new adds or whatever, automatic email forwarding of requests for unseeded boots to people who have indicated their ability/willingness to seed, multiple administrators, etc. etc. etc.  etc.  There could be an automatically updated personal list of all a users' downloads vs. what is available so it's clear to new and newish collectors what they are missing. Whatever is done largely manually now we can find a way to improve. People may have other ideas on how to proceed- there are of course many options.  But we can do a lot better than the current process with a true database driven solution and this is a natural time to rethink things because of the changes with megaupload etc. As I said earlier, I can help if there is interest.

The existing system is pretty good.

The only truly necessary step is to get everything up as torrents. Links are conveniently organized at Queenconcerts.com, but it'd be nice if someone deleted some of the links to inferior versions to minimize the clutter.

My website is always there as a guide for version A vs. version B. It's almost better not to have everything in one place, as it would encourage dialogue between people instead of just having a bunch of people pointing and clicking and being on their merry way.

It's 1% of the work being proposed here, and the end product will be about the same. I'm always in favour of simpler, more time-efficient methods. But of course, feel free to do whatever you'd like, folks.

You guys would know better than I what would work best. I don't even use torrents/downloads and never come to this part of QZ but the word 'database' caught my eye on the main page. What I do know is database stuff and wringing the most out of them and building great user interfaces for the web. As they say, when you're a carpenter everything looks like a nail. :) My thinking was that it might be good to build something that works for the complete neophyte and the experienced collector alike and I thought it would be cool to have a really great system grow out of the Queen fan community. But perhaps that's already happened to the satisfaction of most, so just know that the offer always stands.
