I recall hearing that Roger Daltrey made one, in his teens, before The Who really kicked off.

I dunno. I'm pretty sure they both did! It was pre-Who, at any rate.

That is a great documentary, the guitar build is indeed pretty interesting, my guess is many have tried but failed early on. Mr May design and construction surpasses 99% of guitars out there, the shear versitility of it is astounding when compared to a Les Paul or Strat
