What do you think of the Queen performance at Live Aid?

I think we're actually going to the opposite extreme. Sure it's overrated, but I think some people are actually starting to UNDERSTATE it. It is definitely one of their strongest shows all around.

It's a great performance made all the greater by the fact that Queen were just so damn savvy about it.

Their popularity was waning somewhat, and given the opportunity to showcase the highlights of their career and remind the whole world why they were one of the biggest rock bands ever, they did exactly that.

i'd like to say that queen at live aid was a great moment in a very good day. as someone who remembers it all vididly and saw it from the wembley opening right thru to the end of the philly gig, i loved the whole day. queen were one of many highlights.
but @croatiafan: really? you really do think this? then you need to get out more!!!
let's deal with your comments individually:
"The greatest twenty minutes in the history of rock and roll"
come on, you're not going to let "dark side of the moon", beatles on ed sullivan, bob dylan going electric, woodstock, pistols and bill grundy, mtv airing for the first time...get in the way of your weird perspective are you?
"The? day when the Earth stood still for Freddie"
no. the "day the earth stood still" in rock n roll parlance would put, buddy holly's death, john lennon's death, elvis' death, kurt cobain's death and EVEN freddie's death above live aid as "stood still moments"
"The best live rock performance ever"
no. the best live performance at live aid, maybe. but on 4 of the five times i saw queen live they were better than live aid. that 18 mins at live aid was good. and in the sphere of live aid it was incredible, but in reality it wasn't anywhere near "the greatest live rock performance ever"...i have seen many gigs from 79 to date and i speak from experience when i say that some of these were MUCH better than quene at live aid. and that's not including the gigs i haven't attended that definitely sound better than queen at live aid....the who at leeds, the lizzy gig at philly (unedited), purple california jam, knebworth, elton and bowie at the NEC in the early 80s,

Jesus Christ![/QUOTE]

why "Jesus Christ!" ???
because i disagree with you, and give valid reasons why? because i actually saw queen perform WHOLE GIGS that were better than the 18-minute-xfactor-audition-come liveaid?
look, it's subjective, and because i'm not some stepford who thinks they're the best at everything they do, does not make me NOT a fan, or my comments any less valid than yours...
in case you didn't notice, a few others tend to take my objective view and agree with me....see below your "Jesus Christ" reply

Queen blew everyone else away. Though not sure about the comment about waning popularity (in most of the world) given they'd released The Works the previous year with a number of hits but I think it certainly brought them back into popular focus as a great live ROCK band.

As far as the actual performance goes Freddie was in great voice (as it wasn't during a long tour and his voice was rested), the band was generally tight being not long after The Works tour (the obvious exception being the end of Hammer to Fall as they tried to finish the song early).

Considering the onstage sound was probably a bit dodgy given the nature of the event it was a brilliant. It's just a shame they hadn'y flew over to the U.S. to perform rather than Phil Collins then they'd have shown Americans what they'd forgotten.

On a personal note I'd watched TV all day waiting for Queen and just whe they came on I got called for dinner. My mum got really angry so I missed some of it (at the time).

Live Aid was great overall.

It's got some of Freddie's best vocals in a live setting (like Radio Ga Ga), and it shows that smoking didn't ruin his voice.
I always knew I was a star And now, the rest of the world seems to agree with me-Freddie Mercury

In fairness, they were pretty much the only band that put the serious rehearsal into performing for that day. It's hardly a coincidence that they were better than anyone else.
They're living(or not as the case may be) proof that practise makes perfect!

I thought Queen's performance was a show stopper and did steal the show.

Considering that Freddie had throat problems and was told by his doctor that he shouldn't sing at Live Aid. I am so glad that Freddie ignored his doctors wishes.

I was in grade-school at the time and slept over at a friend's house the night before so that we could spend all day watching Live Aid.

Which was a good plan until my friend got all pervy on me that night and wanted to do some "playing around" then when Live Aid was on his mom declared that it was time for lunch and that the TV had to go off - just as Queen took the stage.

All in all a pretty crappy day.

Queen did blow (nearly) everyone else away, but that still doesn't mean it was their best gig. Queen performed at ca 60% of their skills. People like McCartney and Sting performed at ca 30% of theirs, others (like Page, Plant & Jones) performed at 15% of theirs - that's why Queen were 'better' that day.
John hated Hot Space. Frederick's favourite singer was not Paul Rodgers. Roger didn't compose 'Innuendo.' 'Bohemian Rhapsody' hasn't got 180 vocal overdubs.

Great. Did it take you more or less than 20 minutes to find this 5 year old thread and revive it?

Five years later, I correct my statement... sort of: most artists did perform rather poorly compared to their usual standard, but they were also facing logistical issues which caused that.

Queen were great. Way, way better than I used to give them credit for.
