We bought a drum kit, thought we were perfect.

Can I just ask if it´s the lyrics that make WAS IT ALL WORTH IT so popular ?

1) Spread your wing
2) Death on Two Legs
3) In the Lap of the Gods (revisited)
4) Breakthru
5) Seaside Rendezvous

Some of these may seem less obscure, but, living in southern California, I'm just choosing them based on how knowledgeable the average person seems to be towards Queen.

...unless queen really are a singles-only band not to be taken seriously on an album level?

Basically. They are so iconically defined by a half-dozen massive songs that most people don't even see the albums they came from. Almost like being a one-hit wonder numerous times over. One hit wonders are plagued by their one big song despite often having rich back catalogues, but in the case of Queen it's several hits.

Aside from the really big fans, there is one album people MAY know - A Night At The Opera. Or maybe Made In Heaven if you're in the UK. That's actually Queen's best-selling album, next to compilations.

Even great connoisseurs of music will cite ANATO as being the one to hear, possibly along with Sheer Heart Attack. Although I did once read a book on guitarists that recommended The Works as one of the top three albums, strangely enough.

Queen records have often been critiqued as having filler. But if What Goes On and Within Or Without You aren't filler, then I don't know what is. Rubber Soul and Sgt Pepper are brilliant records, but I see SHA and ANATO as being equally groundbreaking in terms of the way the band used the studio to its fullest potential. But most of the world doesn't agree with me.

Are there single Beatle tracks that are as iconic as BoRhap and We Are The Champions? I honestly don't think so. The stature of The Beatles is bigger than any single song, but I don't think we can say the same for Queen. But that's the consequence of having songs that are so massively successful and ingrained into popular culture. The songs become bigger than you, and the rest of your work might as well not exist to 99.9% of the world.

Personally, I do find it unfortunate that the early Queen albums are not held in as high regard as they may deserve. But there is a plethora of great music from the last 50 years that has completely missed the radar. At least Queen remain in the consciousness of most people, and that's more than most artists could ever ask for.
