Interesting that the BBC home page for Queen there states that they formed on 27 June 1970.
Is this a universally quoted and accepted date (ie when Deacy first rehearsed or gigged with them?), or have the BBC just made it up?
Sort of goes against the official line of forming in 1971??

In answer to my original question, I've just found out that 27 June 1970 was the first gig played (in Cornwall) under the name Queen

Indeed it was - but they continued to use the Smile name to their advantage, to get gigs well into 1971.
Smile was a popular name on the circuit while the name Queen has no street cred. They'd show up to a gig and say they just came up with the name Queen on the way down. Cheeky..
