Ten years to the day before Freddie Mercury died, Queen filmed the first of two nights at the Montreal forum.

Contrary to many tales told in Queen folklore, the crowd were not dull and unenthusiastic, as this audience recording reveals. The audience were brought down in the mix for the early VHS and DVD releases of the Montreal shows (simply entitled "We Will Rock You") between 1984 and 2001, all of which the band had no control over. The sound on the latest Queen Rock Montreal release does the band and audience alike justice. The Game was still a huge record in 1981, and Mercury had the audience in the palm of his hand all night.

This recording serves as a great companion to the official releases, as most of that material actually comes from the second night. Dragon Attack, the Now I'm Here reprise and Love Of My Life are missing from this audience tape, so we're not sure which night(s) they came from.

The original 90 minute cassette copy had some edits made before it made its rounds. Flash and The Hero were slotted at the end of side A after Under Pressure (with a cross-fade to disguise the edit) so that the show could be distributed on a single cassette without having to cut any of the songs. This has all been fixed here, and the result is the most accurate running order of the show as it happened. The speed has also been corrected, as the tape ran a bit slow.

After Brian does the Under Pressure tease prior to Killer Queen and Freddie responds with "fuck off" (as seen on the video), at the show he continues: "David Bowie is not here tonight," which the audience boos, and he adds, "He's fucking somebody in London."

Brian plays a bit of the b-side "I Go Crazy" during his solo spot. The guitar solo on the official releases is a compilation of both nights (mostly the first night), but this part was omitted.

Total running time - 87:41.

Tracks marked with an asterisk (*) were used for the official releases.

Cheers for this.

I'd debate the point of the band having no control over the mix though - the original mix was by Mack, and he was very much 'their' guy and not hired by the director etc.. and so surely they would have had a fair amount of input on this?

I do remember when the remixed Rock Montreal was released that Brian put a piece on his Sopabox really criticizing the Mack mix, which I thought was a bit harsh as they must have been happy with him at that time, and after, as they used him on so much material?

Mack or no Mack, both Brian and Roger said for years that they hated the sound. Yet more evidence to suggest that only two band members actually liked the guy.

Contractually the band signed the rights to Mobilevision, and perhaps hiring Mack was a way to be close-ish to the process. But at least to Brian and Roger, it backfired.

The debate continues :-)
