Sacha Baron Cohen 'taking singing lessons for Freddie Mercury biopic'

Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly taking singing lessons for the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic.
The Borat actor will portray the Queen rock icon in the movie project, and is said to be working with vocal coaches to copy Mercury's style, reports The Sun.
Insiders claim that it has not been decided whether Cohen's voice will be used in the singing portions of the film.
Cohen has also reportedly viewed hours of Queen concerts and Freddie Mercury's private videos to hone his speech and mood.
A Hollywood source said: "Sacha is a huge Queen fan and is focused on getting Freddie's mannerisms, style and speech perfect.
"He is working on building his vocals. It is an uphill task, because Freddie has such a unique power and tone."
Tom Hooper has been heavily rumored to be directing the project, having previously worked with Sacha Baron Cohen in the musical Les Misérables.
The Freddie Mercury biopic is expected to start filming this year, for a 2014 release.
Good to know he's actually doing some work to get the vocals right.
Weren't they supposed to start filming in late 2011 or something? It would be very nice if they would actually start working on the film instead of just releasing vague little press releases every couple weeks or so.

Why not just dub the real Freddie on for the singing. I mean I can't see how Cohen could come anywhere near Freddie's standard. And if you're not going to use Cohen, why would you use anyone else other than Freddie? They could use some rare stuff and release it as well in support of the movie. Just some thoughts.

Don't know about anyone else, but I'd much rather hear newly recorded vocals by the person portraying Freddie than the actor miming to Freddie's voice. In fact, I think the latter would just sound and feel outright strange, and just wouldn't work well.

I agree with Heavenite, dub Freddie/Queen for the singing/music. SBC should concentrate on Freddies expressions, personality, movement and speaking...that would be difficult enough. If they use original music/vocals then at least it might be worth watching.

As we ALL really know, these news stories about his singing are a distraction, as he sings like Richard Harris or CAptain James T kirk on acid, so will NOT truly be singing.
No,the real problem they don't want to focus on, or anyone to question, is his crap acting and how rubbish his performance will be.
Regards him being a big Queen fan, I don't believe that is his motivation, because if he truly cared about Freddie and Queen he would sign up Jeremy Kapone, or at least Johnny Depp, or something.
His. Motivation is his ego, he wants to steal Freddie's crown and ride on the back of his name.
The reason they have not been able to get a director, is because he is in it, no director with any self respect wants to have his name associated with such a pantomime conman taking the star role in a movie about such an icon as Freddie.
