Steven Soderburgh seriously wished to have made his biopic of Che a 10 hour tv epic
And Martin Scorsese plans to make a tv series version of his Gangs of New York movie, much longer than his 2 hour movie version.
Surely this should be the attitude of those making the Freddie Mercury Biopic, in order to tell the whole story properly.
How does ten hours sound? Ludicrous?
But considering each section would be covered properly, I think along with a serious director like Steven Soderburgh , it is not as outrageous as it sounds.
It should be noted
These directors are cinema directors who don't plan to make their tv epics look like cheap tv, they plan to make them look like full on cinema but 10 hours long episodic pieces of cinema.
In fact the Godfather trilogy could have been made as a tv special , divided into three seasons, made up of a series of sectional series for each season, if you think about it.
The unedited version of the French version of the Jackal was actually close to 6 hours as each section in its full unedited version was close to 2 hours each
anyway...
The Godfather trilogy runs at 583 minutes
Which is 9 hours and 43 minutes long,
The Jackal , a mere 5 and a half hours, which is not long enough for Freddie's story to be told expansively, from beginning to the end of live touring , or even only up to live aid.
Yet all we have been threatened with, is a short tale played by a tall tale talentless , yet very of the moment cash cow, complete with milking it , udders , that are making Hollywood drool at the box office prospects of a quick easy dirty-lucre ,fashionable flash in the pan,non-actor money return.

Ten hours!!
The length of a movie does not always relate to its quality
Lord of the Rings (yawn)..

No way would I give up 3 or more hours to watch a Freddie biopic. A really well put together documentary? Maybe. Biopics fucking suck. Even the best ones suffer from the constraints of being what they are.
PS. Make me a mod so I can ban this guy (again).

If you think anyone, excepting mentally ill fanatics, would want to spend 10 hours, even if it were split into ten hour-long episodes, watching the history of a band, you're insane.

Nah, ain't gonna work mate. His story is not quite an historical saga, sometimes it's better to be short and sweet. A la "Elvis the movie" , "great balls of fire" , "The Buddy Holly story" "Backbeat" , all commendable films , well received.

Chaplin was 2hours 23minutes long
A very good biopic
But it didnt have the international scope that Freddies life did, as CHaplin basically left england for hollywood and the only other reference is to his narration in switzerland but we never see him go anywhere really he just tells the story of his hollywood life.
I use a narration technique but is a story not a narration it is Freddie retired played by sacha or by Crabtree out of hello hello
I am serious he would be older is fantasy remember.
Crabtree is good he has grey hair and can act sacha does not grey hair (but he may aswell have, as he is too old so would suit this fantasy , and the comedy elements would suit him to a tee anyway, and he cannot act but he can be funnywhich would be ok for this fantasy style anyway
I don't think you realise the international sweep of Freddie's life , both personally and with Queen.
You have Zanzibar when he arrives (see my fantasy sequences , and script ideas here,
http://www.queenzone.com/forums/1341585/freddie-mercury-script-writer-found-borat-moving.aspx
then his family home in Feltham, then his first flat in London a crap bedsit, then another nicer flat, then his first good home in Kensington ,
then his main home in London that he had only just got by live aid really.
But you have all the tours,
England ,America, canada, Japan, Australia, the whole of Europe and various European cities,.south America
then Eastern Europe.
plus living in at homes in London, America LA and New York, then living in Munich with all that personal stuff
Then holidays in Ibiza , and a constant touring schedule , staying in all those places again and again, and again ,which was a constant in his life and can't be brushed over as as it truly was a Main feature .
always on the move , on world tours all over each country then to the studio, all the different lovers male and female. Etc.
.There is so much scope VIsUALy the great cities of the world, the european ones for the americans who love europe
Just think of how attractive the movie could look!
the night life studio 54 and the rest Munich etc and drama and relationships in international settings.
He had many lovers and friends in both America and Europe.
And the amazing recreation of long haired mercury with queen performing all those great early shows live!!,
There is so much scope so much drama, so many dramas about the relationships men and woman America Europe each one a story a drama
But then always the momentum of the story can be reignited by great stage performance recreations epic shows enormous stadiums the ecstasy of queens live music set to panoramic views of cities and awsome stadiums day and night
Always a opportunity to reignite the pace and then even then you get the triumphant live aid
The royal family there red hot sun London the day of world recognition, the whole world involved in that day , Wembley stadium white towers in hot baking sun,the streets empty, the windows open , everyone on the entire planet watching,.
everything !!!you have everything !!!! everything needed for making THE most engaging and exciting rock movie ever in the history of the world'!!!!
You should end it with Freddie at his last show holding his crown,
It is only fitting to end such a story of such resonance dramatically and emotionally, visually musically, with him in his royal robes holding his crown and surveying his people
it is triumphant!!!!

I would prefer some actual concentration of time on each facet of the different phases in his life rather than four minute sections devoted to each.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Queen and Freddie Mercury, but nobody wants to watch a 10 hour biopic about how he realized he was gay and was conflicted on his background vs his stage persona.
My expectations for this biopic are really really low and I assume it will be a movie-by-formula.
Did anyone else realize that Ray and Walk the Line are EXACTLY THE SAME MOVIE?

The biopics you mention are not true biopics
They are Hollywood silly things
Which are in fact b movies
They have no depth no quality
You think they are proper cinema but they are not
No I want all the resources of queen and everyone else to be spent on the best true biopic ever.
And a short two hour format will not be good enough
It has to be done properly
It is not just a money maker project or it should not be!
You seem to think that any in depth biopic has to have a catch angle ie it has to focus on. One thing such as Freddie being gay
It does not and that is not the reason a expansive biopic is needed
You are thinking in Hollywood terms
I am not
I am thinking in terms of making a very in depth drama of his life story ,if you read above , I try to explain how many different things need to be included all the different relationships and the time needed to truly do justice to them, I also explain the epic scale needed for what is meant to be epic
Ad how that could be done in a very exciting way using all the benefits of the live shows and the cities of the world etc
So there is much scope for story that is a real story and not just meant for the use of bite size bits of silly newspaper. Style fodder about his sex life. Relationships and conflicts do not only need to be about sex or even sexual partners, stories include not just his sexual partners or lovers there are many relationships many friends and business relationships to cover also.
When authors set out to research and write a biographical book. They do intentionally not miss things out, they try to write the most in depth and authoritative biography they can , why should a official biography on film be any different?
The only reason would be money, however Queen are not short of money, the greatest selling band in british music? and who have a long running west end musical which rakes in millions and ofcourse their contunued sales , not to mention their recent whole back catalogue on top of that , they happen to have DE Niro as a producer a man said to be one of the greatest actors ever, who's very name attracts moey backers ,and they have the most successful uk production companies of recent times GK productions, so money should be the last of their worries.
The makers know they are guaranteed to sell anyway
Guaranteed absolutely guaranteed it is Freddie Mercury! But they have a duty, they know how loved he was, their guaranteed sales should not make them think they can just get away with it, they know they has to make something that is sensational and not just sensationalist, something that does not seem to be a second rate b movie with a bad performance all round and is seen as an insult to Freddie's memory.
All these things they cannot fail to be aware of.
This is why I am stressing what I am stressing, sacha Cohen is a wrong choice totally , but I have found them a replacement, I am not just nay saying, I am constructively literally rescuing them for free.
Freddie was a perfectionist because he was about perfection in his art, he would not compromise it. and I won't either, nor should they dare to.
All they need is here, and I chose real viable good actors who truly were born to play their respective roles, truly born to play them, truly, not just for selling a headline.

What are some examples of the type of biopic you are talking about?

If we all donated one English pound
Selling england by the pound
Dancing with the moonlit knight, genesis live Peter Gabriel
www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdD6L4cKKU8
Do you realise how much money queen would get for making the movie?
Obviously it would be an international campaign
Seriously how much money do you think they would be if every queen fan on the planet donated the equivlient of one pound to finance the movie?
