It's the "too big to fail" concept applied to people. It happens a lot with politicians here, I'm not sure about sports people, but probably the same. Insane amounts of money go 'round in that industry, so certain interests want to prevent anything from rocking the boat too much. Corruption is not merely something for politicians alone.
